Vaisakhi Festival celebrations in Trafalgar Square
Vaisakhi Festival celebrations in Trafalgar Square, London, Great Britain
19th April 2025
Vaisakhi festival is a celebration of Sikh and Punjabi tradition, heritage and culture, commemorating the birth of the Khalsa (the inner core of the Sikh faith) over 300 years ago.
Vaisakhi is the most significant festival in the Sikh calendar, marking the formation of the Khalsa in 1699. The free, family friendly event at Trafalgar Square runs to 6pm and feature live performances, kirtan devotional music, talks, cultural exhibitions, martial arts, children’s activities, and vegetarian food all showcasing the rich traditions of Sikh and Punjabi culture.
This year Vaisakhi on the Square is co-hosted by entrepreneur and disability campaigner Shani Dhanda, and DJ and radio presenter Sukhi Bart. The main stage programme will include Kirtan performances from Qi Rattan and Taren Kaur, and there will be demonstrations of the traditional martial art Gatka accompanied by powerful drumming from The Dhol Academy.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: "London’s Sikh and Punjabi communities make an invaluable contribution to life in the capital, and I’m thrilled to welcome back Vaisakhi on the Square. Londoners and visitors can look forward to an afternoon of free, family friendly entertainment and traditional Sikh and Punjabi culture. The festival is a wonderful example of how we celebrate the many communities that make our city a beacon of inclusivity, creating a more united and inclusive capital as we build a better London for everyone.”

Orange balloons are released over Trafalgar Square in memory & honour of the Bibas family, London, UK.
2nd March 2025
300 orange balloons were released today in memory of the Bibas family who were tragically kidnapped & murdered by Hamas terrorists as part of the Gaza war hostage crisis
The family were kidnapped from Nir Oz, Israel on 7th October 2023
The Nir Oz attack, part of the 7 October 2023 attacks that began the Gaza war, Palestinian militants kidnapped the Bibas family from their home at the Nir Oz kibbutz in southern Israel
The family, which held multiple citizenship of Israel, Argentina, and Germany comprised 34-year-old Yemenite Jew Yarden, his 32-year-old wife Shiri, their sons, 4-year-old Ariel and 9-month-old Kfir
All four family members were held hostage in the Gaza Strip. Yarden Bibas was abducted separately from his wife and children and held by Hamas, while Shiri Bibas and her children were reportedly held by another militant group, the Mujahideen Brigades. Ariel and Kfir Bibas, the two youngest hostages taken from Israel on 7 October, came to be regarded as symbols of the Gaza war hostage crisis.
Shiri, Ariel and Kfir Bibas were all murdered whilst Yarden Bibas was released on 1st February 2025.
