AUSTRIAN MAN KEEPS DAUGHTER IMPRISONED FOR 24 YEARS
A 73-year-old Austrian man has confessed to keeping his daughter captive for 24 years and fathering seven children by her.
According to reports, Josef Fritzl is said to have admitted to Austrian police that he imprisoned his daughter, Elisabeth, for more than two decades and raped her repeatedly.
During this time Elisabeth gave birth to seven children, one of whom allegedly died shortly after birth.
Three of these children have lived their whole lives in the basement of a house in the small town of Amstetten, 80 miles west of Vienna, where Elisabeth was held captive; they only saw sunlight for the first time after being rescued. The other three children were adopted by Mr Fritzl and his wife, Rosemarie.
Mrs Fritzl, 60, has claimed that she had no knowledge of what was happening in the chambers beneath her living room. She believed that the three children she and her husband raised were abandoned outside their home by their 'missing' daughter.
The truth only came to light after Elisabeth's eldest daughter, Kerstin, who lived with her in the basement, was seriously ill. Mt Fritzl took her to hospital claiming she had been dumped in his front garden.
He only released his daughter and the remaining two children from the cellar after doctors appealed for Kerstin's mother to come forward and provide details of her medical history.
It was only then, after the authorities promised Elisabeth that she would not have to see her father again and the children would be protected, that her horrific story was revealed.
According to her account her father began abusing her when she was 11. Then in 1984, when she was 18, he drugged her and locked her up in the basement.
