Chivito: Chivito is the name of a sandwich-style national dish in Uruguay, and consists primarily of a thin slice of filet mignon, with mozzarella, tomatoes, mayonnaise, black or green olives, and commonly also bacon, fried or hard-boiled eggs and ham
Scanwiches: scans of sandwiches for education and delight, New York, America - Nov 2015

    This WILL make you hungry!

A man loves his lunch so much he scans every sandwich he eats.

Jon Chonko's Scanwiches ongoing photo project sees him placing his lunchtime snacks directly onto a scanner.

By cutting the sandwich in half, the picturial results are mouth-watering glimpses of his deli delights.

The Brooklyn-based designer says his project is "for education and delight".

Jon says he has scanned more than 200 sandwiches, published a book and shown his work at several New York galleries.

Some of his latest range from a selection of tea sandwiches with the crusts cut off, to a simple Bologna.

There is also tasty-looking a Maine Lobster Roll, various burgers and a Uruguayan Chivito.

A young house martin photographed at Folly Wildlife Rescue Centre, Sussex, UK. Like its swallow cousins, the house martin (Delichon urbica) is a commonly seen bird all over the UK. The young are born in mud houses built under the eaves of houses, which often puts them in conflict with humans, but I love them.

An adorable project shows the baby birds of Britain in the first days of their lives.

Wildlife photographer Gavin Parsons has worked closely with UK rescue centres to capture chicks bought in for care.

He has spent the last three years photographing some of the baby birds bought into Folly Wildlife Rescue in Sussex and the RSPCA Wildlife Rescue Centre West Hatch in Somerset.

Each year hundreds of hatchlings are bought to rescue centres either after their nests have been disturbed or when they have been mistakenly picked up by well-meaning members of the public after they have fledged.

A baby collared dove photographed at Folly Wildlife Rescue centre. Collared doves (Streptopelia decaocto) are a pretty and fairly commonly seen species in the UK. LIke many pigeon species their young are fairly ugly compared to the adults and this individual is on the cusp of showing its true form as it is growing out of its soft wiry down feathers.

These stunning creatures look like scary monsters from the deep - but they are in fact little more than 2cm long. The Nudibranchs, commonly known as sea slugs, are incredibly difficult to spot as they use their bright colours as camouflage against predators. Divers can spend years in the sea without ever seeing one because they are so cleverly disguised. The incredible images were taken by researcher and photographer Thomas Vignaud, who was diving off the coast of southern France. The 23-year-old said he was amazingly lucky to spot what he describes as 'underwater, living jewels'. Nudibranchs live in virtually all depths of salt water, but reach their greatest size and variation in warm, shallow waters. There are around 3,000 known species found all over the world with the largest growing up to 60cm in length.

THE HAPPIEST SWIMMER IN THE OCEAN

The credit has crunched, the weather is cold, but nothing can wipe the smile from this little fellow's face.

Called a Piglet Squid, this sea creature always looks cheerful thanks to what appears to be a huge grin.

About the size of a small orange, the squid - Latin name Helicocranchia pfefferi - can commonly be found in deepwater (greater than 100m) in most of the world's oceans.

But this cute chap is more distinctive than most thanks to pigments which dot its skin - making it seem like the happiest swimmer in the ocean.

Scientists gave it the name thanks to its tuft of eight arms and two tentacles on its 'head', as well as its habit of looking porky when inflated with water.

Its body is almost totally clear revealing a dark mass that is the internal organs and barely visible, feather-like gills. It also has a large light producing organ (photophore) beneath each of its eyes.

The picture was taken by California's Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. CMA Director Mike Schaadt says: "Our photographer Gary Florin took a marvellous picture of this rarely seen yet fairly common member of the deep sea plankton community. The angle Gary took the picture at makes it look comical."
