KAZAKHSTAN / Zhangiz-Tobe / 2008. Abandoned Soviet military base after the collapse of the USSR. Inside the Palace of Culture on the military base. The painting is a reproduction of the original by P. Krivonogov "Capitulation", 1946. Zhangiz-Tobe housed R-36 / SS-18 'Satan' intercontinental ballistic missiles, one of the most powerful of Soviet weapons. The end of World War II saw the USSR emerge as one of the world's two superpowers. Celebration of victory over Nazi Germany replaced the cult of Revolution and gave a legitimacy to the regime. The painful realities of the war often found expression in allegorical semi-religious images of mothers holding dead children in their arms. Honouring the immense sacrifices of the war was at least one thing which the government and the people could agree about.

These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.
They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.
Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.
The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".

GERMANY / Berlin / 2008. Abandoned Soviet military base after the collapse of the USSR. Berlin-Karlshorst was Moscow's intelligence headquarters in East Germany. Situated on the eastern outskirts of East Berlin it extended over a 50 acre compound. Some 2000 staff were employed including 500 KGB officers. The fresco on the right is a reproduction of the original painting by P.Maltsev "Assault on the Sapun Mountain", 1958.

Epic quest to find the world's forgotten frogs
Epic quest to find the world's forgotten frogs
Four years ago, conservationist and photographer Robin Moore embarked on the largest global quest for species lost to science. Accompanied by over 120 scientists in 21 countries, he went in search of frogs and salamanders last seen between 15 and 160 years ago.
The four-year quest has produced some surprising rediscoveries, including the Ventriloqual Frog from Haiti, capable of throwing its voice, and the Borneo Rainbow Toad, unseen in 87 years, and remarkable new species such as the "Monty Burns Toad" from Colombia which bears a striking similarity with the nefarious villain from the Simpsons.
Moore's fascinating new book, In Search of Lost Frogs, tells the story of the quest - its highs and lows, failures and discoveries, and the campaign's ongoing work - in a 70,000 work narrative wrapped around over 400 striking photographs.
As we lament the rampant loss of species in the midst of the sixth mass extinction - with amphibians at the forefront as the most threatened vertebrate group - Moore believes that hope is as important as despair in motivating people to care. "As conservationists we often get so caught up in communicating what it is that we are losing that we forget to instill a sense of hope," Moore says. "We need to revel in the weird and the wonderful, the maligned and the forgotten, for our world is a richer more wondrous place for them. Stories and images of discovery and rediscovery can help us to reconnect with our inner explorer - they can make us feel part of a bigger, wilder world. Rekindling a connection with the world beyond our concrete boxes is the key to caring about the way we are treating our natural world."
Photo Shows: A male Hourglass Frog, Dendropsophus ebraccatus, calls to a female on a blade of grass below in the Osa Peninsula, one of the biologically richest places on earth.

Top five NASA Landsat observation satellites images of Earth - 24 Jul 2012

Top five NASA Landsat Satellites Images of Earth
During a span of 40 years, since 1972, the Landsat series of Earth observation satellites has become a vital reference worldwide for understanding scientific issues related to land use and natural resources.
Beyond the scientific information they supply, some Landsat images are simply striking to look at, presenting spectacular views of mountains, valleys, and islands as well as forests, grasslands, and agricultural patterns.
By selecting certain features and colouring them from a digital palate, the U.S. Geological Survey has created a series of "Earth as Art" perspectives that demonstrate an artistic resonance in satellite land imagery and provide a special avenue of insight about the geography of each scene.
NASA asked the public to vote on their favourite images from the more than 120 images in the online "Earth as Art" collection. From over 14,000 votes the top five winners were:
1st Place: Van Gogh from Space Landsat 7 Acquired 7/13/2005. In the style of Van Gogh's painting "Starry Night," massive congregations of greenish phytoplankton swirl in the dark water around Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. Population explosions, or blooms, of phytoplankton, like the one shown here, occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fuelling the growth and reproduction of these tiny plants.
2nd Place: Yukon Delta Landsat 7 Acquired 9/22/2002. Countless lakes, sloughs, and ponds are scattered throughout this scene of the Yukon Delta in southwest Alaska. One of the largest river deltas in the world, and protected as part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, the river's sinuous waterways seem like blood vessels branching out to enclose an organ.
3rd Place: Meandering Mississippi Landsat 7 Acquired 5/28/2003. ...
