Plan for harvesting solar power using orbiting reflectors
Ferrari Press Agency
Solspace 1
Ref 15478

See Ferrari text
Pictures MUST credit: Andrea Viale / University of Glasgow
A scheme to use giant Earth-orbiting reflectors to provide power to solar harvesting farms, is being developed by scientists.
The huge gossamer-thin reflectors would deflect more solar energy down to the surface for collecting.
And it has become more viable because thanks to private companies , the costs of accessing space have been dropping.
A team at Scotlands University of Glasgow says its Solspace project would send a number of reflector satellites into a high orbit designed to track over roughly the same ground path each day.
It has been given a grant worth €2.5 million euros into new ways of maximising solar power generation.
This path would be chosen to make the reflectors visible from as many large terrestrial solar farms as possible.
OPS: A not to scale render of Solspace orbiting reflectors

Puzzle inspired solar powered van designed to get through power outages

A solar powered van designed to be of help during disasters is being developed.
The vehicle called Puzzle is equipped with three rooftop photovoltaic panels to charge its battery.
Because it is being developed in Japan where earthquakes are frequent, the solar panels make is less reliant on traditional charging.
Its small size and limited power output means many everyday users could operate it without ever needing to plug it in.
In addition, it has three emergency power outlets so its batteries can be used as a power source during extended power outages.
The Puzzle van features a built-in first aid kit, WiFi connectivity, and a crowbar.
Maker HW Electro said the puzzle-inspired design allows its components to fit together in a cost-effective way, making it suitable for “emergencies and for daily convenience” alike.

A futuristic airship with the potential to fly forever without refuelling is under development.
The Solar Airship One is a rigid airship which will initially circumnavigate the globe using eco-friendly, solar and hydrogen power without ever touching down.
French start-up EuroAirship says the aircraft will be a “commercial airship of the future,” using 80 percent less fuel and with considerably lower CO2 emissions than conventional aircraft.
Solar Airship One is set to be ambitious with an initial flight around the Equator of 40,000 km lasting from between 20 and 30 days.
It will fly at an average altitude of 6 km.
The rigid skinned airship provides stability against external pressures, while also regulating internal temperature.
