Somali youth struggle to integrate in the US
November 26, 2013, Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States: Two Somali young men are taking the elevator inside low rent apartment building in Cedar Riverside quarter of Minneapolis. Since 1992 an estimated 100 thousand Somalis have immigrated to Minnesota, mostly because the state is considered quite liberal, and has a good health care system payed by local taxes. The now second generation of Somalis born in the US has met many challenges trying to merge their Somali culture with the US way of life. These cultural differences have created a gap between young Somali men and women: Young men often get in trouble with the law, some, between 25 to 50 since 2007 have joined the Muslim fundamentalist militia Al-Shabbab in Somalia, while hundreds have joined local gangs, young women usually study. Howling Good Time! Coyote Teaches Pups to Howl

These two coyote pups desperate to follow in their parent's pawprints start by learning to howl.

The stunning images taken by wildlife photographer Debbie DiCarlo shows the cute pups learning the ropes from their elder, as the coyote tips back its head to let out an ear-piercing howl.

Debbie, 59, who resides in Ohio, said: "The pups were so cute - exploring, playing and generally learning how to be a coyote.

"The magic began when distant coyotes started to howl and the pups and adult started to answer back."

DiCarlo got the shot during a spring photography workshop earlier this year at a wildlife preserve in Hinckley, Minnesota, where she was able to photograph baby animals.

Charmed by how excited the pups were during the howling lesson Debbie said the shutter on her camera was moving so fast she was worried about it overheating.

"I couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear, there was something so special to be amongst them at that moment, and the sight and sound will forever be imprinted in my memory," explained Debbie.

The moment was so perfect, in fact, that sceptics accused DiCarlo of snapping a photo of a still life in a museum.

Her response: "Howling Lesson has lots of sceptics who believe it to be a museum diorama. In fact, I have read that some think it is too perfect. My reaction? Thank you for such a wonderful compliment!"

The Icemaker - Chad Cowan's Super Storms
It looks like the end of the world, instead this once-in-a-lifetime image shows a lightning bolt crackling from a hailstorm cloud.

The jaw-dropping picture - dubbed The Icemaker - captures the storm that unleashed the world record hail stone onto South Dakota in summer.

And storm chasing photographer Chad Cowan is hoping that this highlight of last storm season will win the National Geographic Exceptional Experiences photo contest, in which it is down to the last six finalists.

His gallery of best shots taken in 2010 also offer some amazing glimpses at nature at its most powerful.

The 26-year-old, a storm fan since his early teens, follows dramatic weather across the United States and even runs tours for storm fanatics.

But even for a seasoned storm chaser the decision to drive towards this storm was a cause for apprehension.

Chad, from Kansas, explains: "Looking at the radar on my laptop, it became obvious that there was one storm that would be an absolute monster.

"I became somewhat apprehensive in driving towards this storm because I saw that the ingredients of a 'perfect storm' had come together

"We saw this cloud explode into the sky like an atom bomb, and it soon became a supercell also, south of the larger storm.

"As we approached, though, my stomach dropped as the shape of the beast became visible above the horizon.

"I had never seen anything like it and didn't speak much, only muttering single syllable words like, "epic" and "woah".

"I finally got my wits about me and decided to get out my camera. I flipped it on, checked the settings and leaned out the window and snapped my first shot of the day.

"As fate would have it, I saw a lightning flash through my viewfinder as my shutter clicked. I didn...

Republican Party Convention, Minnesota, America - 03 Sep 2008
In a speech to delegates at the Republican Party Convention in Minnesota vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin launched a stinging attack against the media and Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. In her first major speech since being chosen as the running mate for Republican nominee John McCain, Governor Palin talked up her small town roots and defended her record as Alaska's Governor. Commenting about Senator Obama during the 40 minute speech she said: "Listening to him speak it's easy to forget that this is a man who's authored two memoirs, but not a single major law or even a reform, not even in the state Senate". Palin also spoke about her family's 'ups and downs' - a reference to her 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy. During the speech she introduced her husband and each of her five children, who were all in the audience, and indirectly answered the critics who have latched onto the idea of a conservative, pro-life governor who has a pregnant and unmarried teenage daughter.
