Tawny Owls Hide In Wood Burner To Shelter From Arctic Winds
A couple arrived home to find a pair of tawny owls huddled together in their wood burning stove on Friday evening (17th February).
Beverley and Kenneth Parker returned to their Suffolk farmhouse from a trip away and were shocked to discover the owls in their wood burner.
After realising the owls were not unburned logs, Mr Parker, 58, closed the curtains and opened the doors to release them.
The owls circled the room before flying out the front door, ruffling feathers outside with birds not used to the sight of them in the daytime. They were later spotted perched on a nearby barn.
Mrs Parker, 54, said: "We saw them about an hour afterwards and could hear all the other birds around making a noise as you don't see owls during the day."
This is not the first time the couple have been shocked by birds though - they once found a live pigeon in the wood burner.
The RSPB warned of Arctic winds affecting wildlife at the weekend as this pair of tawny owls are just one example of animals taking desperate measures to keep warm.
The wildlife charity is hoping for more happy endings in the last few weeks of winter as they urge people to continue to provide food, water and shelter for birds.
RSPB wildlife adviser Val Osborne said: "This 'blow-in' is a great reminder that birds need our help during cold weather though perhaps these tawny owls were a bit too keen!
"The ups and downs in temperatures are confusing for wildlife and though it's getting milder this week, we might not be through the worst of it yet. With the breeding season just around the corner, it is important for birds to be on top form to breed."
