This is the incredible moment a carpet shark lying on the ocean bed pounces on another shark in a rare observation of cannibalism
/ 08/2011
[This is the incredible moment a carpet shark lying on the ocean bed pounces on another shark in a rare observation of cannibalism. The terrifying tasselled wobbegong has been known to target other sharks as an ambush predator but an attack has never been seen before. However, while studying the Great Barrier Reef in Australia scientists captured the moment it pounced on a helpless bamboo shark. They watched for 30 minutes as the 1.25 metre wobbegong slowly injested the one-metre long bamboo shark with the predator dislocating its jaw to gobble up such large prey. The opportunistic kill, which happened in August, was only revealed in the latest edition of the Coral Reefs journal.] (FOTO: DUKAS/ACTIONPRESS)
