An electric aircraft that uses a unique spinning barrel-shaped rotor blades, has completed a maiden first flight by its demonstrator.
Austrian startup company CycloTech says its vertical take-off and landing BlackBird air vehicle is based on 16 years of development of the technology called CycloRotors.
Each propulsion barrel is set to spin at a constant rate, the walls of the barrel being made up of tilting airfoil blades
The tech means the aircraft is capable of high precision flying both sideways and backwards as well as mid-air braking without tilting or banking the vehicle.
That makes its 360 degree freedom more manoeuvrable than more traditionally powered rivals in the short city hop market it is aimed at, currently being developed
A CycloRotor configuration is said to allow it to fly and land safely, even in the event of a rotor failure.
The company said the flight was on March 27 and marked a major milestone in the mission to revolutionise air mobility with CycloRotor technology.
The BlackBird has six 7th generation CycloRotors.
The unique setup allows for vertical take-off and landing, hovering with a pitch angle, mid-air braking, parallel parking, and precision landing even in adverse weather conditions.
The production machine, currently known as "CruiseUp," will be larger and is slated to launch as a two-seater personal aircraft with a 100-km range and a top speed of150 km/h.
OPS:Render of the proposed CruiseUp which is designed to be privately owned flying vehicle as part of a next generation of flying cars and taxis.
