With the completion of a tanker terminal 3/4 mile from the island this year, also built by the Wimpey Organisation, it is expected in the first stage to ship some 1.5 million tons of oil a year.
The concession covers 12000 sq miles of sea and the company is owned by British Petroleum Co Ltd and by the Compagnie Francaise des Petroles.

An Ogoni man states his protest against the Shell oil company in Ogoni land. Shell's wasteful and destructive practices have caused conflict in the region resulting in much bloodshed. Despite promises by the company this has led to little compensation being paid out to local communities.

A sign put up by Shell oil to deter tribespeople in the Delta region from tearing up their (Shell's oil) pipelines. For many years controversial oil prospecting and extraction have left the local people furious at the loss of their forest to oil spillage, light pollution from flares and no finds coming back to the region.

A gas tubes are seen in the Center of Nukus city, near Moynaq, Uzbekistan, Thursday, May 3, 2007. Forty years ago, Moynaq was a busy fishing port where the waters of the Aral Sea lapped up against the shoreline.
Today the waters have receded so much, that there is not a drop as far as the eye can see.
When the former Soviet Union diverted the Ama Dariya and the Syrdariya - the rivers which fed the Aral Sea - to grow cotton in the desert, they created an ecological and human disaster. (FOTO: DUKAS/WORLDPICTURENEWS)
