Professor Alex Seifalian who helped create the trachea used in world's first synthetic organ transplant, University College London, Britain - 13 Jul 2011
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Rex Features ( 1394022c )
First Synthetic Organ Transplant Paves Way For The Future
A unique liquid that can potentially be transformed into a human heart and other organs?
It sounds like science fiction but Professor Alex Seifalian and his team are on their way to making it science fact.
53-year-old Seifalian, who is Professor of Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine at University College London, has helped to create a kind of liquid plastic that could, in the future, be used to make transplantable organs.
In fact the first such operation has already gone ahead with Prof Seifalian and his team helping to create a trachea used in the world's first wholly synthetic organ transplant.
The operation in Sweden saw a man have a section of his windpipe replaced with a piece built from his own stem cells and Prof Seifalian's polymer.
Without the substitute trachea the patient, whose own windpipe had been blocked by a tumour the size of a golf ball, would have died.
The substance used to help create the synthetic trachea, and which has been developed by Pro Seifalian and his team, is polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-poly (carbonate-urea) urethane (POSS-PCU).
It is a liquid plastic that sets solid when it is heated up or cooled down and contains billions of tiny holes.
In order to create the synthetic trachea the patient was first scanned using 3D computerised tomography (CT).
These images were then used to form a glass mould that was a perfect copy of his trachea. In turn, this was used to develop a 'scaffold' using the POSS-PCU.
This scaffold was then sent to Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden where stem cells from the patient's bone marrow and linings from his nose were incorporated into it.
After two days, the millions of nano-scale holes in the porous synthetic trachea had been seeded with the patient's own tissue.

Julie Cardoza and her performing parrots, San Jose, California, America - Dec 2010
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Karine Aigner / Rex Features ( 1323914a )
Performing Parrots Take A Bow
Julie and Ed Cardoza's brood is a talented bunch - capably doing everything from roller skating and skateboarding to bowling and basketball.
And if you were to call them featherbrained, well, they probably wouldn't take any offence.
For the couple from San Jose in California raise and train performing parrots.
According to the Cardozas, teaching their feathered friends tricks enriches their lives because they enjoy the attention and activity.
Parrots can become depressed and socially deprived if not given a lot of time and attention.
So, the Cardozas appeal to their birds' needs by teaching them both natural and trained behaviours.
One of their stars is Harlequin Macaw Zac, who was hatched in 1988 and hand fed from the age of 10 weeks by Ed and Julie.
Zac is a hybrid Macaw, the product of a Blue and Gold Macaw crossed with a Green Wing Macaw.
He is also a brainy bird with a wide repertoire of tricks, including riding a bike and scooter, skateboarding, raising a flag and rolling over.
In addition he speaks over 100 words/phrases.
In his time Zac has performed over 5,000 shows as well as appearing on the Tonight Show and Animal Planet's Pet Star.
According to Julie Zac loves all food but he can't be spoiled too much or he won't eat his vegetables.
Forrest is a Green Wing Macaw hatched in 1990 and raised by the Cardozas from the age of four months.
Easy going and friendly, his tricks include roller skating and playing the shell game
Forrest loves to go through the drive-thru and would always order a fruit parfait if only he could say the word.
Slender Billed Cockatoo Piper's species is native to Eastern Australia and are very rare in the United States.
Piper was hatched in 2006 and she has been raised by the Cardozas since she was thre...

'Knit Your Own Royal Wedding' by Fiona Goble, Britain - 11 Mar 2011
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Ivy Press / Rex Features ( 1295235a )
Help William And Kate Tie The Knit
If you haven't received an invitation to the royal wedding there's no need to despair - as now you can knit your own.
An unusual souvenir book has been published full of patterns detailing how to knit ten 'characters' from Prince William and Kate Middleton's big day.
This includes the bride and groom themselves, the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, his wife Camilla and best man Prince Harry.
The intricate designs see Prince William in full uniform, including blue Garter sash and Golden Jubilee medal.
Meanwhile, Kate's diamond and sapphire engagement ring and a tiny tiara are also faithfully depicted in wool.
There is also design for the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams who will marry the couple on April 29 at Westminster Abbey.
And you can even knit your own corgi - the monarch's favourite breed of dog
The knitting patterns are all contained in the 64 page manual 'Knit Your Own Royal Wedding' by Fiona Goble, which retails for GBP 9.99.
The book also contains instructions on how to create customised guests, enabling you to knit yourself into proceedings.
And once you've created the cast of characters you can pose them against a backdrop of Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace's famous balcony.
According to publisher Ivy Press: "This piece of yarn pageantry is funny, charming and easy enough for even a novice to tackle".

Cape Province, South Africa
A WORLD OF DIVERSITY AND DIFFERENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA
From vast plains to rolling mountains and golden beaches to barren deserts, South Africa is a vast country of huge diversity.
And its bustling cities are just as varied as its landscapes - from the likes of hustling Johannesburg to the cosmopolitan Cape Town.
The country is renowned for its wines and is the world's largest producer of gold.
In 2010, it will also play host to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the first time the contest has been held on the African continent.
Cape Town is the second largest city in South Africa and is the capital of the Western Cape Province.
It is also the legislative capital of the country, being the location of parliament and other government buildings.
One of these is the old city hall, a large Edwardian building in the city centre that was built in 1905.
It was here, on 11 February, 1990, that Nelson Mandela made his first public speech just hours after being release from prison.
Cape Town is noted for its architectural heritage, with the highest density of Cape Dutch style buildings in the world.
One of its latest constructions is slightly different however - the main stadium that will host matches during the World Cup.
Known as the 'Mother City', the Cape Town metropolitan area covers a vast sprawl; however, the city centre or 'bowl' is relatively small.
It is nestled between Table Bay and the Table Mountain range, which provides a dramatic backdrop to the city.
The flat-topped Table Mountain, along with other famous peaks such as Lion's Head and Apostles Mountain, form part of the Table Mountain National Park.
This area is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top of Table Mountain.
Its main feature is what gi...

Four-year-old identical twins Megan and Gracie Garwood who are both fighting cancer, High Rougham, Suffolk, Britain - 21 Jan 2010
FOUR-YEAR-OLD TWIN SISTERS BATTLE CANCER TOGETHER
A family have spoken of their heartache after their four-year-old, identical twin daughters were diagnosed with cancer within days of each other.
Emma Garwood has described the "living nightmare" of discovering that both her daughters Megan and Gracie have leukaemia.
The brave twins were diagnosed within a week of each other and have been receiving treatment for the past five months.
It was younger twin Megan who was diagnosed first, with Gracie, who is older by two minutes, following shortly afterwards.
It was last August when Megan first became unwell and her GP immediately referred her to hospital.
Here she was diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia before being rushed to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge; she began chemotherapy that very night.
Emma said: "It all seems like a dream sequence. I still just assumed she had a bug. You never think anything this bad could happen to you.
"But suddenly a doctor says your daughter has cancer and moments later we are being rushed to Addenbrooke's in an ambulance with all the blue lights flashing. And then at midnight you watch your daughter begin an intense course of chemotherapy".
The only comfort for Emma, 38, and her husband Mark, 35, who also have a younger daughter, was the reassurance that the chances of Gracie having the same disease were remote.
Tragically however, just days later she fell unwell and her worried parents brought her to Addenbroke's to be checked over.
Mrs Garwood said: "She thought she was only there to visit her sister, but they took one look at her and before we knew it she was moved into the bed next to Megan for treatment.

All Is Revealed: The Calendars Bare All For 2010
ALL IS REVEALED: THE CALENDARS BARE ALL FOR 2010
The original was such a hit that it spawned a motion picture starring Dame Helen Mirren and Julie Walters.
Now, ten years after they first took their clothes off for charity, the Calendar Girls of a Yorkshire Women's Institute are launching a new calendar for 2010 at Harvey Nichols in Leeds to be sold in support of charity Leukaemia Research. The 2010 calendar boasts a completely new set of twelve images of the Girls, which for the first time are in full colour.
It was the tragic loss in 1998 of her husband John from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 54 which inspired Angela Baker and her friends from the Rylstone WI to make the first 'naked' calendar. The women hoped the sale of the original calendar would raise enough money to buy a sofa for the local hospital where John, an Assistant National Park Officer for the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, was treated.
However, it turned out to be much more of a success than originally anticipated.
To date, the Calendar Girls have raised nearly GBP 2million for Leukaem...

DUCHESS ON THE ESTATE: SARAH FERGUSON TACKLES 'BROKEN BRITAIN'
Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York is back on our TV screens in another bid to improve the nation.
As part of her latest humanitarian mission Sarah will spend time on a housing estate in a new programme for ITV1, 'Duchess on the Estate'
The inspiration for the documentary was Sarah's shock at returning to Britain and finding a place she didn't recognise with a lack of community spirit.
In bid to help this change, in the new series she travels to the Wythenshaw estate in Manchester, one of the most deprived areas in Britain where TV comedy Shameless used to be filmed.
Here she attempts to come up with a blueprint for change that could help the families she meets.
As a mother, and believing that women in fractured communities hold the key to making things better, she sets out to galvanise the women in the households and empower them to raise standards, expectations and ambitions.
She is shown the ropes by one family and tours the locality in an effort to learn as much so that she can help facilitate change in the area.
Sarah comments: "'Some of our communities are so fragmented and I'm convinced that if we can start to give people a sense of community spirit they can start to work together to improve their local area and lifestyles".
In a similar series that aired last year Sarah, who has been a spokesperson for Weight Watchers for ten years, attempted to tackle what she considered to be an impending obesity problem in Britain.
Cameras follow her as she moved in to B&B next to a Hull council estate and became acquainted with life there - getting to know the local families for 'Duchess in Hull'.
Here she met, and tried to help, the Sargersons, an overweight family with a li...
