BEDDING USED TO PLUG HOLE IN LINER AT SOUTHAMPTON
3 FEBRUARY 1950
Fifty miles an hour gusts swung the 30,000 tons bulk of the American liner 'Washington' against the quay wall, splitting her bows above and below the waterline as she was attempting to berth at Southampton from New York today (Friday) with 622 pasengers aboard.
Despite the efforts of six tugs, she hit the quay head on, dragged the tugs, two of which broke loose, and drifted along close to the wall, menacing the 'Athlone Castle' and the 'Aquitania'.
The liner, which looked in danger of going aground, dropped her anchors and was pulled up but another gust swung her hard against berth 105. Plates on the waterline were damaged near the bridge, and a wooden fender was driven into her port side below the waterline.
