Patricia Krentcil, arrested for taking five-year-old daughter to a tanning salon, New Jersey, America - 24 April 2012
A mother has been arrested for taking her five-year-old girl to a tanning salon.
Patricia Krentcil, 44, faces charges of child endangerment after the girl's kindergarten teacher noticed severe burns all over her body.
It is alleged that the New Jersey woman sneaked her daughter into a stand-up tanning booth a week prior to her arrest on 24 April. State law bans those under the age of 14 from using a tanning facility.
Ms Krentcil appears in her police mugshot with what appears to be the orange glow of an artificial tan on her skin. She has now been freed from Essex County jail on $25,000 bail.
Detective Anthony Montanari of Nutley Township Police Department said: "Police were called to an elementary school out of concern when a kindergartener was experiencing pain as a result of a pretty severe sunburn. Allegedly, the mother took the child into a standup tanning booth, resulting in the burns."
Staff at the parlour in Nutley told police they did not see a child being taken into the booth and would have prevented it if they had, Montanari said.
