    Swan Lake
600 beautiful birds gather together in one breathtaking group on their very own swan lake.

Photographer Richard Austin captured the moment the swans gathered together for feeding time at Abbotsbury Swannery in Dorset.

He patiently waited for over two hours as the centre's hungry swans slowly began to gather at the edge of the lagoon where staff awaited them.

Abbotsbury was established during the 1040s by Benedictine Monks who farmed the swans to produce food for their lavish banquets.

Today it is the only managed nesting colony of mute swans in the world.

The swans are free to come and go and each year over 600 return to breed and raise their young.

According to swanherd Dave Wheeler, this year the first eggs are expected to hatch on 30 April - two weeks earlier than normal.

According to local folklore this means the country will enjoy an early summer.

Twenty-one swans have been rescued from freezing conditions on a waterway on the Somerset Levels, but 10 have been found dead on the ice.

Volunteers from Secret World Wildlife Rescue captured the birds, which were starving or stuck in the ice on the South Drain.

Animal care manager Sara Cowan said the swans could not find food because the ground and the water were frozen.

She said they had been put in a pen and would be fed until the weather eased.

"With the big freeze nothing has thawed and everything is really struggling now," she said.

"The swans are having terrible problems. They're flying around trying to find their waterways, but everything's just white and they're coming down on anything.

"We've had three on the hard shoulder of the M5 in the last two days.

"Once it's all defrosted they can come back down, but for now we will look after them."

    A Year Of Animal Magic
A brand new calendar is aiming to bring a little animal magic into your life.

Produced by photographer Richard Austin, the new calendar features a host of adorable critters.

These cute creatures include fluffy ducklings sitting in a row and a mini pig sheltering from a shower under a red umbrella.

Elsewhere, a hedgehog nestles amongst autumn leaves while a jackdaw appears to be whispering a secret to a deer.

And, just to get you in the festive spirit, a miniature porker has a cracker to pull.

Richard has been snapping animals professionally for more than a quarter of century.

Richard Austin's Animal Magic Calendar 2013 is available from his website www.richardaustinimages.com for GBP 8.50.

Richard Austin's 2010 'Animal Magic' calendar, Britain - Nov 2009
    A YEAR OF 'ANIMAL MAGIC'

A new calendar full of animal magic captures a host of cute creatures throughout the year.

Photographer Richard Austin is known as one of the best in the business at snapping unique animal images.

And he's gathered together just of a few of these for his 2010 'Animal Magic' Calendar.

This features a host of feathered, furred and hoofed animals braving the elements or making the most of the season.

In chilly January a pair of newborn lambs venture out in the snow wearing customised red plastic coats to keep them warm.

As the month of romance, February sees two mute swans creating the shape of a heart with their necks.

In March Lo the lamb gets a spring in her step as she explores some newly bloomed daffodils.

Eddie the Eagle Owl gives us all a wink in April, while a baby gosling peers out from amongst the garden flowers in May.

Lucy the Kune Kune pig sleeps in June after gorging herself on too many fermenting apples.

In July a rather menacing swan faces the camera full on, while a month on Bjorn the kitten takes it easy in a striped deckchair.

In September a harvest mouse nibbles on some tasty blackberries and a duckling takes a snooze amongst the falling leaves in October.

Meanwhile, a feisty zebra foal dashes through a stream in November.

As the year draws to a close a robin perches on a Christmas log in a picture perfect winter scene for December.
