Lose Your Heart To Makepeace Island
For anyone looking for their very own exclusive island retreat Richard Branson's Makepeace Island is a dream destination.
In the shape of a perfect heart, visitors are sure to fall in love with this luxurious Australian island, which is the private hideaway of Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Blue (Australia) co founder Brett Godfrey.
Located on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, the authentically Balinese in design Makepeace can be exclusively hired out and accommodate up to 22 guests.
Earlier this year, the island was named in the acclaimed Tatler Travel Guide as 'one of the world's best 101 hotels'.
Named after former resident and colourful local character Hannah "Shotgun" Makepeace, the 25 acre island was completed in 2009 as a private retreat for family and friends of Branson and Godfrey.
In July 2011 its doors were opened for exclusive use hire - allowing others to enjoy the tranquility of this very special place.
The island boasts three private villas each with 2 bedrooms, separate lounge and private deck.
The entry foyer of each features a waterfall and fishpond and the bathrooms have lush bromeliad and palm gardens and luxurious carved volcanic boulder bathtubs.
Meanwhile, the Bali House features a 4 bedroom wing each with private facilities and deck that is directly attached to the main entertaining areas.
These entertaining areas consist of a two storey raised Wantilan (Balinese for 'open sided') and the 'Long Room', both of which overlook a spectacular 135,000 gallon lagoon pool and river.
Featuring Balinese style lounges, silk furnishing, antiques and a pool table, the Wantilan is the perfect place to relax.
The colourful centrepiece is a handcrafted rustic teak daybed with intricate floral and animal carvings.
Meanwhile, The Long Room f...

Travel To Burma: A Touch Of Freedom?
Has life become any easier for Burmese citizens? Has the recent "election" of a new government given reason for optimism?
Revisiting the country after almost a decade - and an encounter with Aung San Suu Kyi - leaves a mixed impression. Should we go there on holiday ?
Admittedly, a handful of well-stocked supermarkets in Yangon, some clubs and a few trendy restaurants were not there before. And after spending 15 out of the last 21 years in house arrest, "The Lady" is now free to move about. Nobody I met seemed to regret the generals' move to the countryside, after having built a grandiose monument to their own isolation in the brand new capital of Naypidaw, built at huge expense in a country remaining one of the world's poorest. There they comfortably reside, miles away and out of sight from the squalor and poverty to which they have sentenced their 50 million countrymen.
The November "election" did offer a few seats in the new parliament to a somewhat disorganised opposition, and in theory at least offers a forum for political dialogue - although the revised constitution guarantees the military continued power. Critics describe the new constitution as mere window dressing, camouflaging the regime's reluctance so far to engage in open public debate.
Regardless, little of this presents much hope to Yangon's homeless or the poor street hawkers and the merchants, still resigned to display their shoddy goods, cheap souvenirs and outdated magazines on the decrepit sidewalks of the city, plying their trade in the fumes from cars emitting grey clouds of exhaust - for those lucky enough to afford the scarce petrol. Nor does it change the lives of the rice farmers and oxcarts drivers in the countryside, or the destiny of women, hunched over small heaps of pebbles, fixing holes...

Pensioner prison, Onomichi, Japan - 20 May 2008
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Jeremy Sutton Hibbert / Rex Features ( 779471L )
A prison warder makes his way through the fenced and grilled walkways connecting buildings, in Onomichi prison., As the Japanese society rapidly ages, the country is now having to deal with a sharp rise in the number of criminals from the pensioner age group. Over 65's now count for the fastest growing age group of inmates.
The Crisis Of Japan's Ageing Prison Population
THE CRISIS OF JAPAN'S AGEING PRISON POPULATION
At a rate much higher than any other developed nation, Japan's over-60s are becoming the fastest-growing criminal age group in the country. The number of over-70s alone charged with criminal offences has trebled within the last 8 years from approximately 10,000 to 30,000. Last year the ratio of elderly offenders to younger offenders was 1:6 compared to 1:24 a decade before.
The most common crimes by the elderly tend to be petty offences like theft and shoplifting, but there were also 150 reported convictions for murder. Such is the dramatic increase in the percentage of elderly prisoners (currently 12% of the total prison population), Japan has been forced to invest billions of yen to construct 3 new prison wards to house over 1,000 inmates.
The causes behind this phenomenon are not simple to explain away. The obvious roots lie in Japan's rapidly ageing population, in which the demographic of the typical 'population triangle', which comprises of a large base of young people and small pinnacle of the elderly, is starting to invert, meaning that the number of Japanese over the age of 60 is increasing at a greater rate than usual in comparison to the increase rate in the number of under 30s.
However, this does not explain away the fact that while the number of Japanese aged 60 and over grew by 17% between 2000 and 2006, the number of prisoners in the same age bracket soared by 87%. Criminol...
