NEWS - Taifun Mindulle erreicht Japan
August 22, 2016 - Tokyo, Japan: At Tokyo's Harajuku Station, a large tree fell over due to high winds generated by Typhoon Mindulle, hitting the platform roof and an overhead cable. The tree, part of Meiji Shrine which borders the station, fell over mid afternoon and caused an immediate suspension of Tokyo's JR Yamanote Line, the major commuter that encircles the city. Delays remained in place well into rush hour, much to the frustration of commuters already squeezed by other above ground commuter lines being halted. This typhoon, the ninth of this season, hit greater Tokyo and the outlying Kanto Plain area with the eye making landfall in neighboring Chiba Prefecture at around 12:30 p.m. Packing sustained winds of 126 kph (78 mph) and gusts as high as 180 kph (112 mph), Mindulle was the equivalent of a category 1 hurricane. It caused flooding as well as delays and cancellations to rail service including commuter lines, long distance express trains and the Shinkansen bullet train. In addition to rail disruptions, 244 flights were canceled at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. (Torin Boyd/Polaris)

NEWS - Sitzstreik gegen US Army: Okinawa protestiert gegen Stützpunktbau
July 23, 2016 - Tokyo, Japan: A group of some 800 activists protested in Shinjuku district to air their frustrations over today's announcement by the US Armed Forces to resume construction of a controversial US Marine Corps air base in Henoko town on the northern end of Okinawa. This base will be a replacement for the USMC Air Station Futenma on the southern end of the island, a densely populated area. These activists claim that relocating the Futenma base to Henoko will altar the ecosystem of the Yanbaru forest where protected birds habituate, as well as cause irreversible harm to coral reefs where the endangered dudong lives, a type of Okinawan manatee. In addition to environment concerns, Okinawa residents are angered by the recent murder of an Okinawan women by an American contracted base employee and former military, as well as use of Offsprey aircraft which have crashed in urban Okinawa. This all equals a call for the revision of the US Japan Armed Forces Agreement concerning all US military in Okinawa. (Torin Boyd/Polaris). (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) *** Local Caption *** 05554961
