The anniversary of Ahmed Shah Massood's death is a national holiday. In honour of his martyrdom, his portrait is put up in the stadium in Kabul every year. Massood, the great grandson of a Tajik commander, played an important role in driving the Soviet army out of Afghanistan. He survived at least nine major Russian assaults. He later became a minister in the government of President Rabani. From 1996, he fought against the Taliban as the leader of the Northern Alliance., Two days before the 11 September attacks on the United States, Massood was killed by a Taliban suicide bomber. A year later, President Hamid Karzai pronounced him a National Hero of Afghanistan.

OUT OF THE DUST - LIFE IN AFGHANISTAN

A powerful collection of images of everyday life in Afghanistan will be displayed for the first time in the UK in a new exhibition this summer.

'Out of the Dust - Life in Afghanistan' features images by Dutch photographer Hans Stakelbeek. The exhibition runs from 30 July-31 August 2008 at PM Gallery in west London.

In 2007 Hans Stakelbeek was commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to document the reconstruction of Afghanistan during the efforts to restore peace and stability to the country.

Stakelbeek made four trips last year, shooting in Kabul and Uruzgan, as well as other remote areas.

As the project developed, he also became interested in capturing the stories of the people he came to know, as well as the reconstruction efforts required by his official posting.

    ELVIS FAN TRAVELS THE WORLD

The ultimate Elvis Presley fan has spent the last nine months hip-shaking his way around the world dressed as his idol.

Matt Hale, 38, is wearing an Elvis-style white jumpsuit, bouffant wig and shades throughout his year-long trip around the globe to pay homage to the King.

Throughout his travels the radio producer from Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire has partied at Brazil's Carnaval, posed next to the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and trekked to the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru.

He has even gatecrashed Australia's biggest Elvis festival, where he came last in both the lookalike and soundalike contests.

"I love Elvis and when I saw the suit in a bargain shop I just had to buy it," said Matt.

"I thought wearing it round the world would be a good way to honour the King of Rock and Roll and it seems to have worked as I've attracted loads of attention."

But not everyone, it would seem, is an Elvis fan.

Matt has been thrown out of the Louvre in Paris for wearing the wrong dress code; asked to leave the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu after spending four days trekking there; and booted out of Evita's cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"The security guards at the Louvre threw me out because I was wearing the Elvis suit and they said it wasn't suitable for the art gallery," he said.

"It seemed a bit unfair as I didn't see anything on the ticket about a dress code. They must have had Suspicious Minds."

Matt, who started his travels in January, has also been left All Shook Up on a number of occasions after being pick pocketed, having his credit cards stolen and finding an alligator outside ...
