Ralph the Bald Penguin and His Specially Designed Wetsuit
Ralph the Bald Penguin and His Specially Designed Wetsuit, Marwell Wildlife Park, Hampshire, Britain - 13 Aug 2009
Ralph became an international superstar when he started to wear a wetsuit for protection against the elements due to moulting much quicker than other penguins, leaving him with sensitive bald patches. Initially keepers designed a suit from the leg of an adult wetsuit however in 2013 Californian surf brand O?Neill designed Ralph his very own custom wetsuit in a sponsorship deal normally reserved for surf and snowboarding stars. Eight months ago Ralph was diagnosed with arthritis, an incurable and degenerative age-related condition which was well managed with medication until recently. Taking all factors into careful consideration and in order to prevent any unnecessary distress or pain to Ralph, we took the difficult decision to euthanase him.

FEATHERLESS PENGUIN GETS SPECIAL MINI WETSUIT

When this unlucky penguin lost all his feathers it looked like he wouldn't be able to swim with all his friends - until he was fitted for a special mini wetsuit.

Unlike all his fellow Humboldt penguins, who lose their old feathers over a few weeks to make way for a fresh set, little Ralph's fell out in just one day.

And with nothing to protect him from the weather the two-foot tall creature was at risk of getting severely sun burnt.

Ralph faced spending a depressing three weeks indoors - away from his group and his young chicks.

But keepers took pity on poor Ralph and fashioned him his own wetsuit from the leg of a suit, which was donated by a member of staff's husband after keepers appealed for one.

The nine-year-old penguin couldn't be happier with his new clothes, which have caused a bit of a stir at his enclosure in Marwell Wildlife, near Winchester, Hants.

Helen Jeffreys, from Marwell Wildlife, said: "Ralph's really taken to his new suit, he's doing really well.

"He doesn't really seem to notice the difference - he's swimming around the enclosure with all the other penguins as usual.

"It's not inhibiting him in any way and it's not bothering him. He's just getting on with his daily business.

"All the other penguins, on the other hand, were intrigued by his new clothes they spent a good while checking him out.

"But when they realised it was still Ralph under the suit they seemed quite happy and don't really pay it any attention anymore."

When penguins moult over a period of around three weeks every year their old feathers are replaced with a new, clean set.

    But Ralph has ba...

World Pea Shooting Championships, Witcham, Cambridgeshire, Britain - 12 Jul 2009
    NOVICE WINS PEASHOOTING TITLE

A complete novice has won the annual World Peashooting Championships after entering for fun.

Jim Collins, 34, came top in the quirky contest in the picturesque village of Witcham in Cambridgeshire after several hours of fierce blowing.

The dad, from nearby Hadenham, Cambs, had a surprise victory after using a conventional peashooter to beat local Ian Asmeade who used a specially adapted laser-guided shooter.

"It was definitely beginner's luck" said Jim.

"It was the first time I had tried the sport and taken part in the competition.

"I was very surprised to win, but extremely happy with the result."

Competitors from as far away as the USA and New Zealand battled it out in the unusual competition.

The contest has been staged on the village green since 1971 when it was first started to raise funds for a community hall.

As part of the contest competitors have to hit a target, which is fashioned out of putty, from a distance of 12 yards.

The pea used is very important, ideally it must have a diameter of no more than 5.5mm, otherwise it tends to get stuck, and it should have a smooth regular shape.

Due to this the common garden pea is unsuitable and the top competitors use dried maple seeds.

    World's Smallest Police Dog
THE SMALLEST POLICE DOG IN THE WORLD

She may be the smallest police dog in the world, but Midge the canine cop is not to be sniffed at.

At 11 inches tall and weighing just under 4 kilos, this plucky pooch is small in stature but presents a big threat to wrongdoers.

The tiny Chihuahua recently clocked up her first solo drug conviction after discovering drugs hidden in a burglar's vehicle.

Midge was enlisted as a puppy by Sheriff Dan McClelland of Ohio's Geauga County Police Department to sniff out illicit substances.

Dan, who is now her owner and partner, admits he was not looking for such an exceptionally tiny dog at first, let alone end up with a Guinness World Record holder.

He explains: "I got the idea for a smaller animal when watching German shepherds struggling to turn around in the back of cars. Increasing payouts for damages caused by larger dogs scratching or damaging paintwork or interiors in their excitement to get the job done was another factor.

About the same time, one of his dispatchers, Melissa Metz, brought in a puppy, the last remaining runt of a litter produced by the union of a rat terrier mum and a Chihuahua dad.

At 10 weeks, Midge was calm and self assured around people and sniffed everything in the Sheriff's office enthusiastically, but at under a kilo could fit on the palm of his hand.

"I decided to take a chance on her as an experiment, and since none of our regular dog handlers was keen - its hardly macho to run an animal this small - I became her partner," says Dan.

First certified on marijuana just after her first birthday, Midge has since passed the tough exam needed to be allowed to snif...

    DOGS' ROLL CALL

After being born without front legs, these pups are finding it wheelie easy to get about.

They are the first four Chihuahua pups in the world to have been fitted with a set of high tech wheels to make life just that little bit easier. And now that they've found their wheels, so to speak, there's no stopping them!

Three of the pups, who are triplets, found their way to the North Shore Animal League in New York after their sister shelter in Virginia was contacted by a backyard breeder.

The pups had all been born with no front legs, which is a problem that can happen with inbreeding.

Coincidentally, another Chihuahua with exactly the same problem was brought into the shelter at the same time.

All four were adopted by Donna Imhof, 48, who works at the animal shelter.

Her husband John helped to build the specially adapted front wheel drive carts to enable the dogs to go for a walk.

The contraptions are made out of aluminium and were assembled with velcro straps to hold them in place, and fleecy padding for comfortable support. They also have lightweight foam wheels so the dogs can easily move them around.

The carts were made thanks to donations that flooded into the animal shelter once the pup's plight was publicised.

Mrs Imhof said: "I fell head over heels in love with the dogs as soon as they arrived at the shelter.

"They were hanging onto life. They couldn't walk, move or even eat properly. It was heartbreaking.

"I just bonded with them straight away and they knew that I wanted to help them".

At the animal shelter the pups were given daily physiotherapy in order to strengthen their muscles. This enabled them to manage a few steps ...
