The Ukrainian convicts recruited to fight the war
Kyiv has freed 3,800 prisoners early to plug gaps in its army as military outfits compete to attract suitable convicts.
800 inmates freed early under a new scheme designed to plug gaps in Ukraine's armed forces. After two and a half years of all-out war, the government in Kyiv is struggling to find recruits. In May, it passed legislation allowing convicts to volunteer for the army, having previously rejected the idea.

'We will stand until the end': Ukrainian defenders of Avdiivka hold on - for now
After almost a decade on the frontline, the city is a wreck, with just 1,200 people left, but it remains of huge symbolic value.
For two months, the Russian army has been trying to seize the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka. First, it launched a massive frontal assault. Dozens of pieces of equipment were destroyed. Then it dispatched armoured columns in different directions. Now, in a third wave, small groups of infantry are being sent to penetrate Ukrainian positions.
Avdiivka has been on the frontline for almost a decade. In spring 2014, Russia staged a military takeover of Donetsk, the regional capital, 3 miles to the south-west and a 20-minute drive away.
Irina, 59, worked in Avdiivka's coke plant. She was injured in 2015 when three Russian grad missiles hit the factory. In May 2022 their house in the town was hit and her husband Viktor, a retired police officer, was wounded in the explosion. Three of his toes were amputated after he contracted gangrene. They are now living in Myrnohrad where they rented an house.

'I love my country, but I can't kill': Ukrainian men evading conscription
As the war stretches on indefinitely, there are few eager recruits and Kyiv's armed forces are short of soldiers.
More than two years into Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion, Ukraine's armed forces are short of soldiers.
Nevertheless, the army is trying to find new people to replace those who have been killed or injured and to relieve exhausted soldiers propping up the frontline. In spring 2022 volunteers queued to joined up, but with the war stretching on indefinitely, there are few eager recruits.
