    Corsican ceremony for Virgin Mary
September 8, 2023 - Casamaccioli, Corsica, France: Brotherhoods pray during the mass for the holiday of the Virgin Mary’s nativity in front of her church. Since at least 1835 the village of Casamaccioli hosts the oldest and most important pilgrimage in Corsica. The story of the Virgin of Niolu dates back to the 5th century. Lost at sea, a Neapolitan naval captain implored the Virgin, who showed him his way with a star that indicated the convent of the selva. To thank her, the sailor buys a statue of the Virgin in Naples and gives it to the Corsicans taking care to place it on a donkey. The villagers on the passage of the donkey fought for the latter’s favors until they made obstacles in order to have for them the statue of the Virgin. The only village that did not mark any desire was Casamaccioli. After a perilous journey through the valleys, the donkey stopped at Casamaccioli on the fairground. Virgin Mary is solemnly worshiped since the Corsican chose her in 1735 to protect them.Since the Evangelization of Corsica by the Franciscan monks in the 11th century, the worship of the saints is a spiritual communion between the people and their faith.
