Performers dressed in bear skins dancing during an end of year festival.
Bear skin event, Comanesti, Romania - 30 Dec 2018
People in Trotus Valley in Romania dress into bear skins and dance to chase away bad luck and bring happiness and blessing to their village. In the past, Roma people captured and raised wild bears and used them as performance animals for money. People believed that bears can heal illnesses and bring strength to them. After keeping bears was forbidden, people started to dance in bear skins to keep the New Year tradition alive. The price of a skin can be as high as 3000 euro.

PETA protest against Hermes use of exotic skins, London, Britain - 31 Mar 2016
Topless model in 'dead ostrich' dress leads PETA protest against Hermes use of exotic skins, Hermes, London. The action comes on the heels of PETA's release of the first-ever exposé of the highly secretive industrial ostrich-slaughter industry, where young ostriches are kept in barren dirt feedlots until they are trucked to abattoirs. There, the 1-year-old ostriches are turned upside down in a stunner, are ejected to have their throats slit, and have their feathers plucked out, creating the bumpy-textured or "goose bump" skin used in Birkin and Prada bags and other "luxury" goods. PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to wear?, is calling on Hermes, Prada, and all other retailers to drop ostrich and other exotic skins

  • London Taxidermy by Drew Gardner / eyevine
    DUKAS_32640644_EYE
London Taxidermy by Drew Gardner / eyevine
London taxidermy was founded by Alexis Turner who has been buying, selling and hiring Natural History for nearly 20 years. He is the author of a new book on the subject of Taxidermy which has just been published by Thames and Hudson titled 'Taxidermy'. Taxidermy is the art of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of animals for display (e.g. as hunting trophies) or for other sources of study. Taxidermy can be done on all vertebrate species of animals, including mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Stuffed animals are appearing everywhere from chic apartments to luxury boutiques. Museums have been dusting down their collections to put them back on display, while contemporary artists have rejuvenated the practice. His book reveals the art of taxidermy in all its weird and wonderful glory, from its beginnings as a tool of natural history research, through crazes for anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and fake taxidermy, to its rediscovery by the art, fashion and design worlds of the 21st century. Alexis Turner has been buying, selling and hiring Natural History for twenty years. He has also been DJ and TV presenter and has been instrumental in raising the profile of Taxidermy and Natural History.
