"Flowering" viruses to tackle harmful bacteria

Clusters of special viruses that eat harmful bacteria have been discovered that bloom into flower-like shapes.
And it is believed these new forms can boost their properties, both for finding and killing targeted bacteria and serving as scaffolding for other beneficial microorganisms and materials.
The viruses are called bacteriophages but are referred to by scientists as “phages” for short.
They are re-emerging as treatments for many forms of infection, because they can be programmed to target specific bacteria while leaving others alone.
Work in the field had dropped off after the introduction of penicillin in the middle of the last century.
But as antimicrobial resistance continues to erode the effectiveness of existing antibiotics, engineers and scientists are returning their attention to phages.
A group of researchers at Canada’s McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, discovered the flowering surprise while preparing slides to view under a powerful microscope.
They were surprised to see the phages had joined together into three-dimensional shapes that look like sunflowers, but only two-tenths of a millimetre across.
By joining together in this way made the phages 100 times more efficient than unlinked phages at finding elusive bacterial targets.

Here are some Christmas-themed decorations for a hot wintry beverage —made from marshmallows.
The highly detailed vanilla-flavoured festive treats feature a wrapped gift, penguin, gingerbread man, Yuletide sweater, packed Christmas stocking and a gnome.
The colourful vegan creations are designed to put on whipped cream or frothy drink toppings to give them a seasonal twist and make them look even more desirable.
They come in a set of six made and sold by US company Sugar Lab which uses 3D printing technology in its creations and describes itself as a “digital bakery”.
A spokesperson said: “Sugar Lab is here to spice up your holiday drinks with these adorable little holiday marshmallows.
“Our test kitchen spent some time researching and found that these crunchy, decorative, little marshmallows float on whipped cream, cool whip, and latte foam.
“Perfect for a cute holiday photo-op!
“We liked placing two or three on a drink for festive vibes, but you could serve up to six per kit.”
The marshmallows cost $19 USD / €17 euros a set from the company website.

Top five NASA Landsat observation satellites images of Earth - 24 Jul 2012

Top five NASA Landsat Satellites Images of Earth
During a span of 40 years, since 1972, the Landsat series of Earth observation satellites has become a vital reference worldwide for understanding scientific issues related to land use and natural resources.
Beyond the scientific information they supply, some Landsat images are simply striking to look at, presenting spectacular views of mountains, valleys, and islands as well as forests, grasslands, and agricultural patterns.
By selecting certain features and colouring them from a digital palate, the U.S. Geological Survey has created a series of "Earth as Art" perspectives that demonstrate an artistic resonance in satellite land imagery and provide a special avenue of insight about the geography of each scene.
NASA asked the public to vote on their favourite images from the more than 120 images in the online "Earth as Art" collection. From over 14,000 votes the top five winners were:
1st Place: Van Gogh from Space Landsat 7 Acquired 7/13/2005. In the style of Van Gogh's painting "Starry Night," massive congregations of greenish phytoplankton swirl in the dark water around Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. Population explosions, or blooms, of phytoplankton, like the one shown here, occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fuelling the growth and reproduction of these tiny plants.
2nd Place: Yukon Delta Landsat 7 Acquired 9/22/2002. Countless lakes, sloughs, and ponds are scattered throughout this scene of the Yukon Delta in southwest Alaska. One of the largest river deltas in the world, and protected as part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, the river's sinuous waterways seem like blood vessels branching out to enclose an organ.
3rd Place: Meandering Mississippi Landsat 7 Acquired 5/28/2003. ...

MARILYN MONROE HAIR PINS Group of hair pins of various shapes and sizes. $1,000 ? 2,000
Tragic Marilyn's Final Possessions Up for Sale
TRAGIC MARILYN'S FINAL POSSESSIONS UP FOR SALE
A rare sale of Marilyn Monroe's personal possessions will feature a robe purported to be the last item of clothing she wore.
The assembled items include clothing from her personal and professional wardrobe and furniture from her Brentwood, California hacienda style home.
The items offer a rare glimpse into the personal life of the tragic legend who resided in the Brentwood home until her death.
Among over 150 items offered for sale is a white terry cloth robe ($8,000 - 10,000) claimed to be the last item of clothing Monroe wore before her death.
This is also an umbrella Monroe held for an iconic photograph taken by Andre de Dienes in 1949 at Tobey Beach.
Other highlights from Marilyn's Brentwood home include; an orange Pucci blouse ($7,000-9,000), Monroe's dining room table (est. $10,000/12,000), living room coffee table (est. $8,000/10,000), Mexican tile table (est. $500/1,000), set of four living room folding benches (est. $5,000/7,000), Mexican framed mirror (est. $3,000/5,000), and other fine & decorative art pieces.
After Marilyn's death in 1962, her home at 12305 Fifth Helena, Brentwood, CA was purchased via auction by Dr. Gilbert Nunez. On August 5, 1962, Betty Nunez went to the realtor's office to register to view the property. By March of 1963, the Nunez's had thought Marilyn Monroe they had ownership, but a half dozen other realtors had also sold the house and the estate was still in probate.
A judge decided that the price of the house would be 10% over the price of the highest bidder. The Nunez's won but they ended up paying 5 times what the house was worth. They moved in...
