Figlia maggiore del Duca di York, che in seguito diventò re con il nome di Giorgio VI, e di sua moglie Elisabetta, prima Duchessa di York e poi regina consorte[2], divenne erede al trono nel 1936, anno dell'abdicazione di suo zio Edoardo VIII.
