‘At the top, it looks scary’: Bingley celebrates Five Rise Locks restoration This article is more than 1 month old Built 250 years ago, the Grade I-listed locks are considered a wonder of British canal engineering
BINGLEY, 23 FEBRUARY 2022 - The major restoration project at the Grade I listed Bingley Five Rise Locks in West Yorkshire.
The UK’s steepest lock flight are part of the Canal and River Trust’s £55-million winter works restoration and maintenance programme across the 2,000-mile network of canals and rivers. The project at Bingley is due to be completed by mid-March.
Bingley Five-Rise Locks is a staircase lock on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Bingley. As the name implies, a boat passing through the lock is lifted or lowered in five stages.
When they opened nearly 250 years ago the town’s church bells rang out, the local militia fired their field guns in salute and about 30,000 awestruck spectators turned up to cheer. Today the Grade I-listed Bingley Five Rise Locks in West Yorkshire are still considered one of the true wonders of Britain’s waterways and can, thanks to a major restoration project, carry on lifting boats up and down the Leeds to Liverpool canal for years to come.
