to mark the launch of new intercity train operator, Britain - 04 Apr 2016
A giant light installation inspired by the North Star has landed in Leeds today to mark the launch of the new intercity train operator, TransPennine Express (TPE). The interactive installation, designed by Leeds-based light designer, Julia Bickerstaff, encourages the public to share their hopes for ?Where Next?? for the North, which then affects the Star?s colour and brightness.

The 3D structure has been constructed using Steel and an array of brightly coloured neon tubing and LEDs. The public are being asked to share their ?Where Next?? hope for future of the North in person using an LED magnet or by tweeting @TPExpressTrains with the #hashWhereNext, to help the Star grow brighter.
Designer, Julia Bickerstaff, who was born in Garforth and is still based in Leeds, added: ?With over thirty years? experience working with light, the chance for an installation on my doorstep was an opportunity I couldn?t miss. The Star is designed to reflect that this is a region that?s going places and
that people, places and ideas make it happen.?
As an esteemed local talent in her field, Julia will also be part of the TransPennine Express ?Where Next? Project?, a mentoring programme launching in May that will find, nurture and showcase talent from the route TransPennine Express serves ? supporting the development and growth of the region. Offering advice and guidance to six successful applicants in the fields of Food & Drink, Music and Art, the ?Future Stars? will be selected based on their talent and potential to contribute to cultural, ...

Shanghai
Pudong Skyline, by night, Shanghai, China. Skyline of Pudong as seen from the Bund, with landmark Oriental Pearl tower and Jin Mao tower, Shanghai, China. The word "bund" means an embankment or an embanked quay. The word comes from the Persian word band, through Hindustani, meaning an embankment, levee or dam (a cognate of English terms "bind", "bond" and "band", and the German word "Bund", etc.). It is thus named after the bunds/levees in Baghdad along the Tigris, when the Baghdadi Jews such as the prominent Sassoon family settled their business in Shanghai in the 19th century and built heavily on the bund on the Huangpo. In these Chinese port cities, the English term came to mean, especially, the embanked quay along the shore. In English, "Bund" is pronounced to rhyme with "fund".
There are numerous sites in India, China, and Japan which are called "bunds" (e.g. the Yokohama Bund). However, "The Bund", without qualification as to location, usually refers to this stretch of embanked riverfront in Shanghai.
The Chinese name for the Bund is unrelated in meaning: it means literally the "outer bank," referring to the Huangpu River, because this part of the riverfront was located farther downstream than the "inner bank" area adjacent to the old walled city of Shanghai. The Shanghai Bund has dozens of historical buildings, lining the Huangpu River, that once housed numerous banks and trading houses from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, a newspaper, the Shanghai Club and the Masonic Club. The Bund lies north of the old, walled city of Shanghai. It was initially a British settlement; later the British and American settlements were combined in the International Settlement. Magnificent commercial buildings in the Beaux Arts style sprung up in the years around the turn of the 20th century as the Bund developed into a major financial center of East Asia.

Shanghai
Pundong area, Shanghai. Skyscrapers near IFC. Shanghai International Finance Centre, usually abbreviated as Shanghai IFC, is a commercial building complex and a shopping centre (branded Shanghai IFC mall) in Shanghai. It incorporates two tower blocks at 249.9 metres (south tower) and 259.9 metres (north tower) housing offices and a hotel, and an 85-metre tall multi-storey building behind and between the two towers.
Shanghai IFC is located in Lujiazui, in Pudong, Shanghai. It occupies a prominent position southeast of the Lujiazui roundabout, diagonally across from the Oriental Pearl Tower and across the road from Super Brand Mall. It is adjacent to Lujiazui Station on Metro Line 2, and can be accessed directly from the underground station via a tunnel.
The south tower of Shanghai IFC and part of the multistorey building was completed in 2009, while the north tower and the rest of the complex was completed in 2010. Work continued for several years afterwards on peripheral aspects of the development, including landscaping and footbridge connections to nearby buildings and Lujiazui Central Park.
The Ritz-Carlton Hotel occupies the south tower, while the north tower houses the current Shanghai headquarters of HSBC in China. Other prominent tenants of the complex include an Apple Store under the sunken forecourt of the building (topped by a cylindrical glass skylight rising from the forecourt), a multi-screen cinema, and a Citysuper supermarket. The remainder of the retail area is largely taken up by upscale chain restaurants and international luxury fashion brands. (Photo by Sergi Reboredo)*** Please Use Credit from Credit Field ***

Shanghai
Pudong Skyline, Shanghai, China.
Directly

Very Striking: Celebrity Matchbook Art
Talk about a striking gallery - an artist uses matchbooks as his canvas.
Mike Bell creates amazing portraits of iconic celebrities on the small packs, and then manipulates the matches to form hand poses.
His sparky work includes John Lennon making a victory sign, Marilyn Monroe with diamonds on her fingers and Jack Sparrow with mini cutlasses.
There are also sulphur versions of Elton John with his piano, Jack Nicholson in The Shining and Robert De Niro as Taxi Driver's Travis Bickle giving us the middle finger.
Mike, from New Jersey, explains: "I wanted to create art on an common object that people discarded. I pondered this as I drank a beer in my local pub.
"I started to doodle on my drink coaster when someone next to me asked the bartender for a pack of matches. I thought (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

DUCHESS ON THE ESTATE: SARAH FERGUSON TACKLES 'BROKEN BRITAIN'
Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York is back on our TV screens in another bid to improve the nation.
As part of her latest humanitarian mission Sarah will spend time on a housing estate in a new programme for ITV1, 'Duchess on the Estate'
The inspiration for the documentary was Sarah's shock at returning to Britain and finding a place she didn't recognise with a lack of community spirit.
In bid to help this change, in the new series she travels to the Wythenshaw estate in Manchester, one of the most deprived areas in Britain where TV comedy Shameless used to be filmed.
Here she attempts to come up with a blueprint for change that could help the families she meets.
As a mother, and believing that women in fractured communities hold the key to making things better, she sets out to galvanise the women in the households and empower them to raise standards, expectations and ambitions.
She is shown the ropes by one family and tours the locality in an effort to learn as much so that she can help facilitate change in the area.
Sarah comments: "'Some of our communities are so fragmented and I'm convinced that if we can start to give people a sense of community spirit they can start to work together to improve their local area and lifestyles".
In a similar series that aired last year Sarah, who has been a spokesperson for Weight Watchers for ten years, attempted to tackle what she considered to be an impending obesity problem in Britain.
Cameras follow her as she moved in to B&B next to a Hull council estate and became acquainted with life there - getting to know the local families for 'Duchess in Hull'.
Here she met, and tried to help, the Sargersons, an overweight family with a li...
