A tunnel has been discovered on the Moon which could provide a base for colonising astronauts.

Radar data taken by US space agency NASA 14 years ago has been recently studied with technologies not available at the time.

And it confirmed the presence of a giant lava tube that could be large enough to house entire bases.

Temperatures on the Moon plunge as low as 127 °C in daylight and -173 °C at night.

There is also 150 times the radiation as on the surface of the Earth.

And there is the hazard of micro-meteors while the lunar surface is covered with a highly abrasive dust that sticks to everything.

Scientists and engineers have been looking for ways to protect future Moon colonists from these hazards for more than half a century.

Both thermal insulation and radiation shielding call for habitats to be protected by heaps of soil, burrowing into the sides of craters or deep into the lava plains that all require construction.

An alternative is to find natural caves that could be modified to meet human needs.

  • An Anatomy of Melancholy review - vivid musical study of an indefinable condition

An Anatomy of Melancholy review - vivid musical study of an indefinable condition
In an intimate show - part a staged recital part a mini-opera - Iestyn Davies and Thomas Dunford perform John Dowland's lute songs epitomising melancholy.

The intimate set, with the audience on all four sides, is a room with a desk covered in pot plants, coffee cups, laptop and books. Glass cabinets contain more plants plus test tubes of coloured liquid. Davies - his voice subtly amplified, singing tirelessly but looking haggard under Stevie Porter's cool lighting - moves restlessly between them, looking for answers.

On December 2, 2021, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, the Zhongshan Scenic Area of ‚Ä‚ÄNanjing in the early winter season is full of forests, colorful and picturesque. From the air, the yellowed sycamore leaves on the cemetery road are like a string of Meiling Palace. "Golden Necklace" is so beautiful, ushering in the most beautiful viewing moment of the year.
Viewed from the air through a drone, rows of platanus trees form a collar. The Meiling Palace in Xuanwu District of Nanjing is like a gem inlaid at the end of the necklace, quietly nestling at the foot of the Purple Mountain. There are folk rumors that the Meiling Palace was a "birthday gift" from Chiang Kai-shek to Soong Meiling. Netizens called this "the world's best necklace" as Jiang Gong's romantic confession to his beloved wife. It is understood that the trees forming the "necklace" on the cemetery road were not planted in the same period.
According to records, the earliest construction budget of Meiling Palace was 260,000 silver dollars, but in the end it actually spent 320,000 silver dollars. The money was first advanced by the Army, Navy and Air Force Command, and later the Nanjing Municipal Finance Bureau also contributed part of the advance. The financial pit left by Meiling Palace for the two departments was finally filled by Chiang Kai-shek with the reimbursement of the total reserve fund of the state finance.

Due to disrepair, Meiling Palace started repairs in December 2012 and was completed in September 2013. The rows of fatons are layered on top of each other, and the shape is like a necklace, which is very spectacular. Netizens called it "the most awesome necklace in the world." These necklace-shaped platanus trees were not planted at the same time. The Fatong that forms the "collar" on the cemetery avenue was planted during the construction of the Zhongshan Cemetery from 1925 to 1929, and the Fatong that formed a "pendant" ..

Pitbull mix Valentina enjoying some peanut butter - Valentina's owners were told that she would need to be removed from Lakewood, Ohio (which has breed specific legislation) but thankfully a DNA test confirmed that she was less than 50% pit and was allowed to stay. It was a terrifying experience for her owners who were prepared to move out of the city so they wouldn't have to give Valentina up.

A photographer with a love affair for rescue dogs has taken a humorous set of images featuring them with something they love ... peanut butter! Greg Murray's heartwarming 'for the love of peanut butter' photo series takes a simple concept - photographing dogs determined to lick peanut butter off their noses - and produces hilarious results. Ohio-based Greg, 34, has taken nearly 100 photos of dogs to date for the series and, as a rescue animal advocate, he always tries to photograph as many rescues as possible. As such his latest collection all involves pitbull mixes who are former rescue dogs or who are still waiting to be rehomed. Many of them have endured difficult early lives.
