Greg Boston, Newport Beach, smells a large globule of oil he picked up from the sand from a major oil spill at sunrise on Huntington State Beach in Huntington Beach Monday, Oct. 4, 2021. Cleanup crews began cleaning up the the damage from a major oil spill off the Orange County coast that left crude spoiling beaches, killing fish and birds and threatening local wetlands. The oil slick is believed to have originated from a pipeline leak, pouring 126,000 gallons into the coastal waters and seeping into the Talbert Marsh as lifeguards deployed floating barriers known as booms to try to stop further incursion, said Jennifer Carey, Huntington Beach city spokesperson. At sunrise Sunday, oil was on the sand in some parts of Huntington Beach with slicks visible in the ocean as well. "We classify this as a major spill, and it is a high priority to us to mitigate any environmental concerns," Carey said. "It's all hands on deck." (Allen J. Schaben / Los Angeles Times)

British photojournalist Rick Findler spent ten days embedded with Qalubna Ma?kum - a group of foreign volunteers who have teamed up with the Peshmerga in Kurdistan, Northern Iraq to help them in the fight against Daesh AKA ISIS. Here, he recounts his experiences.

    ........

Kat, a 29-year-old volunteer fighter based here in Kurdistan, started the Qalubna Ma?kum volunteer organisation when she arrived back in December last year. The name - literally meaning ?our hearts are with you? in Arabic - was thought of after many hours of deliberation by Kat, her French boyfriend Guillaume and medic Michael Wagnon.

Kat is currently talking about how she used to use sky diving as her ?zen? to cope with the very boring free time she had in California after her seven year stint in the United States Army.

Blackpool Zoo is marking Orangutan Awareness Week by auctioning unique works of art hand crafted by its male orangutan to raise money for charity.

Ramon, who is 17, has produced a series of paintings after picking up the skill as a youngster while being hand-reared by keepers at Leningrad Zoo in St Petersburg.

All funds raised will be donated to the The Orangutan Foundation and is intended to support those helping orangutans whose natural habitat has been devastated as a result of the raging forest fires in Indonesia.

The auction will take place on Blackpool Zoo?s Facebook pages throughout Orangutan Awareness Week: https://www.facebook.com/blackpoolzoo/

The Zoo is also releasing Ramon?s extraordinary life story, which documents his journey from boy to man.

Hungry Shark Loses Lunch ... And A Tooth
This Great White shark lost not only its lunch but also its tooth when it attacked a decoy seal.

The hungry shark leapt out of the water to snatch up what it thought was a tasty Cape fur seal in its massive jaws.

However, it was actually a decoy and the over enthusiastic shark bit down so hard that one of its teeth was sent flying.

The moment was caught on camera by photographer Dan Callister off the coast of Seal Island near Cape Town, South Africa.

A large population of sharks patrol the waters around Seal Island, which is home to around 64,000 Cape Fur seals from April to September.

With such an abundant food supply close by, scores of sharks patrol the seas around the island on the look out for young and inexperienced seal pups.

To reach the open sea to feed the seals must first cross these shark-infested waters - passing through what is known as the 'ring of death'.

The predators then catch their prey in truly spectacular fashion.

Approaching from below, the sharks leap nearly vertically out of the waves to snatch seals swimming close to the surface.

The behaviour means that the area is acknowledged as the best in the world to witness sharks breaching.
