Elderly Monkey Surprises Keepers By Giving Birth
A 32-year-old gibbon has surprised keepers at a zoo in Israel by unexpectedly giving birth.

The last time lar gibbon Bettina had a baby was 11 years ago.

However, keepers were astounded to arrive one morning to see her swinging from tree to tree in her enclosure with a baby clasped to her stomach.

Alongside Bettina, the zoo is home to two other lar gibbons - Bagira and Ben-shmone.

But this group had not been expected to re-produce.

In fact the zoo had been in the middle of making plans to import some younger gibbons in the hope of them having a baby.

However, it would seem that Bettina had other ideas.

Currently the newborn youngster goes everywhere with mum, clining onto her fur as she swings around the enclosure.

When it is around four months the baby will start trying to copy mom by getting into the swing of things.

Zoo official Dr. Amelia Turkel commented: "Bettina is 32-years-old. That makes her almost like a woman who is 60-years-old, so it was quite a surprise to us that this baby was born".

Gibbons are considered endangered and are hunted for their meat.

    Cida the gibbon with mother
Mother's favourite, Cida, the baby Lar Gibbon, Thrigby Wildlife Park, Norfolk, Britain - 28 Dec 2008
There's nothing quite like a cuddle from mum, but this baby gibbon has spent the lat five months clasped so tightly in his mothers arms that staff still have no idea if the new arrival is male or female. Five months after the baby Lar Gibbon was born it's mother is still refusing to let him go. So for now the white handed gibbon has been given the unisex name of Cida. The baby is the fourth to be born to the same set of parents so the owner of Norfolk's Thrigby Wildlife Park is as baffled as anyone else as to why she won't let him go. Ken Simms said: ' She seems to be particularly protective of this baby, so much so that five months on we still don't know what it is. ' Cida leaves it's mother for brief moments to answer the call of nature, but is soon back in her arms before keepers have a chance to check it's gender. 'This baby will stay with his mother for anything up to two years and then will remain with the family for a further three years before we try and pair it up with a gibbon elsewhere.
