Harrat Khaybar, Saudi Arabia lies in the western half of the Arabian peninsula and contains not only large expanses of sand and gravel, but also extensive lava fields known as haraat (harrat for a named field). According to scientists, the volcanic field was formed by eruptions along a long north-south linear vent system over the past 5 million years; the most recent recorded eruption took place between 600-700 A.D. The presence of tuff cones -- formed by eruption of lava in the presence of water together with other volcanic features indicative of water -- in the Harrat Khaybar suggest that the local climate was much wetter during some periods of volcanic activity. Today, however, the regional climate is hyperarid -- little to no yearly precipitation -- leading to an almost total lack of vegetation. An unusual hotel is hoping to soothe the ruffled feathers of chicken lovers by providing home away from home comforts for their beloved birds.
The Chicken Hotel was set up by owner David Roberts on his farm in Helston, Cornwall.
The establishment offers a five-star service for picky poultry while their owners are away on holiday.
Dave, 31, came up with the eggs-tradordinary idea in response to the growing popularity for people to rear their own hens.
At first the apparently zany concept had some people calling fowl - thinking it was all a joke.
However, Dave, who is helped by Ariel Roukaerts, 31, now runs a thriving business offering accommodation for chickens and bantams.
During the day the feathered 'guests' range freely in the fox-proof grounds before being rounded and put to bed in their luxury coops at night.
A former cabinet-maker, David Roberts built the plush accommodation himself.
Rates start at GBP 2 per coop per night plus 75p per chicken, which includes the cost of feed.
Dave transports the birds to and from their homes if the owners require it, and even offers a nursery for chicks and an incubation service for eggs that need hatching.
According to Dave the idea has proven to be so popular that the Chicken Hotel has bookings for as far away as Christmas.

Father Waves At Son's School Bus Dressed in Different Costume Every Day
It can be embarrassing when your parents wave you off to school, but when you are a 15-year-old teenager and your dad insists on dressing in a different comical outfit everyday, you have to feel for Rain Price.
His father Dale has adopted 170 wacky costumes to see off the school bus as it passes the family home in American Fork, Utah.
It started when 15-year-old Rain was waved off on the first day of the school year by his normally-dressed pop.
But it all changed the next morning when the teenager was horrified to see his dad wearing a San Diego Chargers helmet.
Since then Rain and his school friends have witnessed a mermaid, a Mariachi, a bride and a scary clown giving them a cheery send-off.
Mr Price even set-up up a toilet outside his front door and sat on it with his pants down and a newspaper.
"It's a way of letting him know that we really care about him, but do something a little different ... It's a father's way of (saying I love you)," Mr Price told KSL.
But his mortified son took some time to get the joke.
Rain, now 16, explains: "When he did it the first day I was in shock. It's my first day of sophomore year.
"You don't want to see your dad dressing up in a wedding dress, waving at you on the bus."
But to his amazement, his classmates supported the wacky daddy and looked forward to seeing what he would come up with next.
"Most of them like it and we roll down our windows and wave. It's fun," he says.
Not that Rain is going to encourage his father. "I'm not going to reward him for this. His reward is seeing my embarrassment," he said.
Mr Price, who refused to wear the same costume twice, admitted it took a big effort to keep up the daily ritual.

Now, to prevent accidents, and stop Ariel from becoming a very soggy moggy, they have to check the machine every time before turning it on.
Ben comments: "Ariel has always had an obsession with the washing machine, even from when he was a kitten.
"Every chance he gets he will leap up inside. If we can't find him it's always the first place we look.
"If we keep the door closed he simply stands in front of it meowing until we open it and he can curl up inside again".
With his fluffy tail and abundant fur it is little surprise that Ariel likes to keep clean, spending much of his washing machine time grooming himself.

Ariel The Cat Cleans Up His Act
Ariel the cat seems to be taking his name just a little too seriously - loving nothing better than sleeping in his owner's washing machine
Despite having a luxury cat basket to call his own, the picky feline can always be found curled up inside the drum.
His obsession may not wash with owners Ben and Tory but all their efforts to persuade their errant pet to clean up his act have failed.
Now, to prevent accidents, and stop Ariel from becoming a very soggy moggy, they have to check the machine every time before turning it on.
Ben comments: "Ariel has always had an obsession with the washing machine, even from when he was a kitten.
"Every chance he gets he will leap up inside. If we can't find him it's always the first place we look.
"If we keep the door closed he simply stands in front of it meowing until we open it and he can curl up inside again".
With his fluffy tail and abundant fur it is little surprise that Ariel likes to keep clean, spending much of his washing machine time grooming himself.
However, his habit isn't welcomed by his human companions, with Ariel failing to clean his fur up after himself.
