Dress rehearsal of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide Welsh National Opera, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, Wales.
20th June 2023.
Directed by James Bonas
Leonard Bernstein’s Candide is a supercharged wild ride in which 18th-century France crashes into 20th-century post-war America. Take a seat and strap in tight for a mind-boggling journey as we hurtle through a fantastical world of chaos – from castles in the Alps to skyscrapers in Montevideo, from earthquakes in Lisbon to the Amazonian jungles beyond the Andes. With societies riven by inequality and families displaced by war today, the story remains as relevant now as when it was first written in 1759.

Dress rehearsal of Migrations by the Welsh National Opera at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, Wales. 28th June 2022.
Migrations
We spread our wings but what are the consequences?
The desire to broaden our horizons is a natural one, but for many, it is a necessity to improve on circumstances. However, the result of doing so often has unintended consequences.
Through a series of parallel storylines, Welsh National Opera’s new opera explores the highs and lows of migration: from the migration of birds to the sailing of The Mayflower over 400 years ago; from the story of an Afro-Caribbean slave in Bristol to the experience of Indian doctors working in the NHS.
The versatility of the music, composed by British composer Will Todd is unlike anything ever performed at WNO, and adapts to the setting and mood of each narrative, written by six writers from diverse backgrounds. An expanded WNO Orchestra is joined by a cast of over 100 performers, including WNO Chorus, Renewal Choir Community Chorus, Bollywood ensemble and a children’s chorus.

5 of the stories have a connection with one of the WNO touring venues (Bristol, Plymouth, Southampton, Cardiff and Birmingham)
Each of the stories has a specific soundscape and an area of the set to occupy, to help achieve clarity between the narratives.
The timeline/storyline will intertwine the stories in a continuous function (rolling together). Towards the end the stories start to unite/merge.

The desire to broaden our horizons is a natural one, but for many, it is a necessity to improve on circumstances. However, the result of doing so often has unintended consequences.
Through a series of parallel storylines, Welsh National Operaís new opera explores the highs and lows of migration: from the migration of birds to the sailing of The Mayflower over 400 years ago; from the story of an Afro-Caribbean slave in Bristol to the experience of Indian doctors working in the NHS.
The versatility of the music, composed by British composer Will Todd is unlike anything ever performed at WNO, and adapts to the setting and mood of each narrative, written by six writers from diverse backgrounds. An expanded WNO Orchestra is joined by a cast of over 100 performers, including WNO Chorus, Renewal Choir Community Chorus, Bollywood ensemble and a childrenís chorus.
