But in just two months they will start flying within the safety of the sanctuary, and by 16 to 20 weeks they will be fully trained free-flyers. Trainer Ravi Wasan said the trio will play an important role in promoting the conservation of native birds of prey. “We’ll take them to schools and into classrooms and kids will learn about them, how they fly, think, look and about how to conserve them,” he said. The five-week-old barn owls were bred at Sydney private sanctuary Feathered Friends, where they are being hand-fed chopped-up mice and rats every few hours. But in just two months they will start flying within the safety of the sanctuary, and by 16 to 20 weeks they will be fully trained free-flyers.
