Plans for a proposed new bridge to replace the one that collapsed in Baltimore in the USA after being struck by a container ship, have been unveiled.
It is one of the first proposals to be tabled and has been dubbed Gateway to America.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge partially collapsed after the collision claiming the lives of six construction workers.
The proposed crossing for the Patapsco river is work of international construction group WeBuild, together with Italian based design and architecture company CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and French consulting engineer and designer Michel Virlogeux.
The design is a cable-stayed bridge that the team sys would redefine the entrance to the historic Baltimore Harbour in Maryland.
It would also become a lasting symbol of the city, improve several functional characteristics of the old bridge and n including features that will enhance safety and long-term adaptability.
The bridge’s main span would be enlarged from from almost 366 m to 680 m / 1200 ft to 2230 ft .
The primary support pillars will be situated in very shallow water, well away from the navigation channel used by large vessels to help avoid a repeat of the accident on March 26.

An American Flag is seen along with the remains of Francis Scott Key Bridge outside Baltimore, Maryland after a container ship lost power and struck the bridge in the early morning hours on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 in Baltimore, MD, USA. Six people are missing and presumed dead after a container ship hit the landmark Francis Scott Key Bridge in the US city of Baltimore. The Coast Guard said it had suspended its search and begun a recovery effort. Several vehicles were crossing the bridge, which is more than 2.6km (1.6 miles) long, when it collapsed after the vessel hit a support. Officials say the ship suffered a "power issue" and issued a distress call moments before the crash. Photo by Aaron Schwartz/CNP/ABACAPRESS.COM (FOTO: DUKAS/ABACA)
