The world's most expensive sheep, Lanark, Scotland, Britain - 28 Aug 2009
WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE SHEEP SOLD FOR GBP 231,000
You might think that he has been fleeced but one Scottish farmer was happy to pay out more than GBP 200,000 for what is thought to be the world's most expensive sheep.
Texel Ram 'Deveronvale Perfection' was sold at auction by Aberdeenshire farmer Graham Morrison for GBP 231,000.
The six-month-old was bought by fellow local sheep farmer Jimmy Douglas at the sale in Lanark.
Mr Morrison said that Deveronvale Perfection was "the best lamb" that he had ever bred and that the price had "surpassed my wildest dreams."
The UK's previous most expensive sheep, Tophill Joe, was bought for GBP 128,000 six years ago.
He died recently after fathering lambs worth more than GBP 1m, meaning Mr Douglas' investment may not be the shear madness it first appears.
The farmer is now no doubt hoping to make a similar profit by using Deveronvale Perfection for breeding.
Following his purchase, Mr Douglas described his new sheep as the best lamb he had ever seen, with "a great body and a strong back".
The farmer is known within the sheep-farming world for his pedigree flocks and earlier this year he paid the record breaking price of GBP 66,150 for a Suffolk ram.
According to the Guinness World of Records, the previous most expensive sheep in the world was a Collinsville stud, bought in 1989 in Adelaide, Australia, for GBP 205,000
