These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.

They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.

Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.

The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".

What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.

oddest items of celeb memorabilia ever sold at auction,
    Marilyn Monroe's chest x-ray,
It might not be the most flattering photo Marilyn Monroe ever posed for.
But six chest x-rays of the star are expected to reach five figures when they go under the hammer in Hollywood next month.
They were taken just two months before her death in 1962 after she suffered a late-night fall.
The snapshots also come with plastic surgery notes, which suggest the natural beauty was helped by a few nips and tucks ¿ including chin implants.
When they were last sold, the X-rays fetched £33,000.

Views of the town of Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia pronounced [u'swaia]) is the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost city in the world. Ushuaia is located in a wide bay on the southern coast of the island of Tierra del Fuego, guarded on the north by the Martial mountain range and on the south by the Beagle Channel. Its population is estimated today (2008) at about 84,000. (2001 population: 45,430 ). The city was originally named by early British colonists after the name that the native Yamana people had for the area. For most of the first half of the 20th century, the city was centered around a prison for serious criminals. The Argentine government set up this prison following the example of the British with Australia or the French with Devil's Island; escape from a prison on Tierra del Fuego was similarly impossible.
