  • Heathrow third runway ruled illegal over climate change
Appeal court says decision to give go-ahead not consistent with Paris agreement

Heathrow third runway ruled illegal over climate change Appeal court says decision to give go-ahead not consistent with Paris agreement
Heathrow Airport. Plane landing at the airport
Plans for a third runway at Heathrow airport have been ruled illegal by the court of appeal because ministers did not adequately take into account the governmentÕs commitments to tackle the climate crisis.

The ruling is a major blow to the project at a time when public concern about the climate emergency is rising fast and the government has set a target in law of net zero emissions by 2050. The prime minister, Boris Johnson, could use the ruling to abandon the project, or the government could draw up a new policy document to approve the runway.

To commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth servicemen and women in the two world wars and later conflicts, a British Airways 747 has been adorned with a giant poppy. In the centenary year of the beginning of the First World War, the 8ft by 8ft poppy will be displayed on the aircraft as it flies to numerous British Airways destinations around the world. Keith Williams, British Airways¿ executive chairman, said: ¿We are honoured to pay our own tribute to the millions who have fought for their country during the last 100 years. ¿We believe this will help deliver the spirit of remembrance to countries around the world and support the great work that takes place through The Royal British Legion¿s Poppy Appeal.¿ The decision to display the poppy is particularly poignant for the many reservists currently employed across the airline. British Airways will asking customers and colleagues to observe a period of silence at 11am on Remembrance Sunday on November 9 and Armistice Day on Tuesday November 11. During both periods, British Airways pilots at UK airports will not start aircraft engines. British Airways staff, along with current servicemen and women, will be selling poppies at Terminal 5 and at British Airways¿ facilities around Heathrow during London Poppy Day on October 30.

Women in Bangladesh prepare Christmas cards for the UK market
A woman living in Sreepur Village in Bangladesh sorts Christmas cards ready for delivery to the UK. The village is home to about 100 destitute mothers and 500 abandoned children. It was established 20 years ago by former British Airways stewardess Pat Kerr, who still spends much of her time in the village supervising its work. Part of its funding comes from the sale of Christmas cards made by the women and sold in the UK, with about 95 per cent of the profits going straight to the women. The UK-registered charity still relies heavily on donations to keep the village running.© Gethin Chamberlain / eyevine
