A map, a myth and a pre-Incan lagoon: Galo Ramon Valarezo the man who brought water back to a drought-ridden town.

When historian Galo Ramon uncovered a long-forgotten pre-Incan water system in Ecuador, he set about restoring it, and helped transform the landscape and livelihoods.

Quito, Ecuador, June 12, 2025. Galo Ramón Valarezo, a historian from Catacocha in Ecuador's Loja province, poses for a portrait in his office in Quito. Through the discovery of a 1972 map that depicted a land dispute between two indigenous communities and a private landowner, he was able to understand an ancestral water collection system that he has now implemented in the area.

A plan to turn a lagoon into a hotel concept with a cluster of chalets on stilts has been unveiled.

The lagoon in Portugal, known as salina, was used for salt production dating back at least three hundred years.

It was abandoned in the early 2000´s and has since become overgrown.

The channels and ponds which wind around the 50 hectare site have since become breeding grounds for shrimp which attract flocks of flamingos and oystercatchers.

Danish architecture company MAST has designed timber houses on stilts.

The cabins were inspired by the traditional fisherman’s huts and jetties which dot the lagoons and rivers of Southern Portugal.

The cabins are accessible by foot using winding, elevated walkways or by boat or kayak and are being prefabricated off site reducing the impact of the construction on the delicate landscape.

The dilapidated salt production building still on site will become a restaurant and spa.

There will also be a new cluster of agricultural buildings inspired by traditional Portuguese wooden salt storage warehouses.

Locals refer to the 70-acre piece of tropical land as ñPedophile Islandî or ñOrgy Islandî - while Jeffrey nicknamed it Little St Jeff. The American businessman is currently being held in jail without bail after being arrested in New Jersey on July 6, 2019, and charged with sex trafficking minors in New York and Florida. According to attorneys for EpsteinÍs alleged victims, most of his crimes took place on the island, which features a library, a Japanese bathhouse, a private cinema, and a lagoon.

People enjoy the Diamond Beach Right next to the famous Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon you will find a black volcanic sand beach where icebergs from the lagoon drift ashore and create the most magical setting. The blue, black, transparent and white icebergs sit on the beach and slowly melt and you can walk amongst them, see through many of them and play around them.
    Seasonal weather, Iceland - 19 Nov 2018

The icebergs originate at the glacier, Breidamerkurjokull, an outlet from Europe's largest ice cap Vatnajokull and therefore is the beach called Breidamerkursandur in Icelandic (sandur means sand). Actually, most Icelanders aren't familiar with the name the Diamond Beach as it is very recent and solely used in English.
