A giant airship being developed by one of the founders of tech-giant Google has been given permission to begin air trials.
Billionaire Sergey Brin and his company, Lighter Than Air Research , known as LTA, is now preparing its Pathfinder 1 rigid airship prototype for its first outdoor flights.
The aim to build the zero-emissions aircraft to be a disaster response and zero-infrastructure cargo flight tool.
Pathfinder 1 is filled with helium gas and is 124 m long and 20 m in diameter.
It is almost twice the size of a UK airship also in production, the Airlander, which is seen more as a luxury flier for tourists.
Pathfinder 1 uses a frame made from 96 welded titanium hubs, joined by 289 reinforced carbon fibre tubes.
These materials advances keep it light enough to fly using helium, rather than hydrogen , the usual lift gas for airships.
The outer skin is made from a laminated, non-flammable material called Tedlar.
Inside the structure are 13 compartments filled with helium and coated in urethane.
The prototype is powered by 12 electric propellers each capable of rotating 360 degrees for thrust and position control.
These are all managed through simple joystick controls.
