Beginning her career as a dancer in traveling theatrical companies before debuting as a chorus girl on Broadway, Crawford signed a motion picture contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1925. In the 1930s, Crawford's fame rivaled, and later outlasted, that of MGM colleagues Norma Shearer and Greta Garbo. Crawford often played hard-working young women who find romance and success. These characters and stories were well received by Depression-era audiences and were popular with women. Crawford became one of Hollywood's most prominent movie stars, and one of the highest-paid women in the United States, but her films began losing money, and, by the end of the 1930s, she was labelled "box office poison". But her career gradually improved in the early 1940s, and she made a major comeback in 1945 by starring in Mildred Pierce, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She would go on to receive Best Actress nominations for Possessed (1947) and Sudden Fear (1952). She continued to act in film and television throughout the 1950s and 1960s; she achieved box office success with the highly successful horror film Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? (1962), in which she starred alongside Bette Davis, her long-time rival.

First Miniature Piglets of the Year born at Pennywell Farm in Devon, Britain - Feb 2009
MINIATURE PIGS SET FOR WORLD DOMINATION
This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed at home Ö and these little piggies decided to hog the limelight.
Though they may only be tiny, the smallest pig breed in the world is actually growing - in numbers that is.
The tiny swine are only bred at Pennywell Farm in Buckfastleigh, Devon, and are a variant of the rare kune kune breed, which is found in New Zealand.
And, after a ten year long breeding programme to perfect the pint-sized porker, farmer Chris Murray is starting to reap the benefits.
Ten more perfect piglets, the first of the year, have just been born - swelling the numbers of the rare breed further.
When the pocket porkers are first born they are just five inches long and three of the animals can fit into the palm of one hand.
When fully grown they are no bigger than a cocker spaniel and weigh up to 80kg.
According to breeder Chris, who believes the animals are too small to be economically used for meat, the half-pint-sized piglets make ideal pets. They are, he says, naturally clean, very clever, and easy to keep.
However, despite the animals' popularity, Chris is careful who he sells them to; he limits sales to between 30 and 50 a year, and only sells them as pairs so they don't get lonely.
And the pocket pets are even more difficult to get hold of now.
After the animals found world-wide fame last year Pennywell was bombarded with hundreds of thousands of letters and emails from prospective owners.

The Disused Elevated Rail Track Set To Become New York's Prettiest Park
THE DISUSED ELEVATED RAIL TRACK SET TO BECOME NEW YORK'S PRETTIEST PARK
A disused railway track looks set to become one of the prettiest parks in New York.
The High Line in west Chelsea is being converted into a park including floating ponds, sundecks and lookout spots over the Hudson River and Manhattan.
The elevated former industrial line had become decrepit and overgrown but thanks to the support of wealthy benefactors and several famous names it is undergoing a transformation into an amazing green space.
With the first phase set to open to the public later this month (June), the park should span 22 blocks once it's all open in 2010.
Stretching 1.45 miles, up to 30ft high and only 60ft wide, the line runs along Manhattan's West Side, from Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea to 34th Street.
Having last carried freight in 1980, it was saved from demolition by former mayor Michael Bloomberg and has seen high-profile support from the likes of Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Weinstein and Jerry Seinfeld.
With $50m needed to complete the project, a recent star-studded fundraising gala saw individuals donations of $10m each from media mogul Barry Diller, whose corporate headquarters overlooks the elevated tracks, and billionaire hedge-fund manager Philip Falcon...

CROP CIRCLE NEAR WINCHESTER, BRITAIN - 29 AUG 2002
Mandatory Credit: Photo by STEVE ALEXANDER / Rex Features ( 388979a )
Motorway Crop Messiahs
Jesus has cropped up alongside a motorway in Berkshire.
Two crop circles depicting the face of the Messiah have appeared on either side of the M4 near Hungerford.
The two images, both 250 feet in diameter, were formed in crops of wheat.
The almost identical circles seem to portray Jesus in similar fashion to the world famous Shroud of Turin.
The Shroud of Turin is a linen cloth which many believe was the cloth used to cover Christ at the time of his burial.
As such, the imprint of a face that can be seen on the shroud is believed to be the face of Jesus himself.
Crop circle expert Karen Alexander commented: "These circles are causing quite a stir in the crop circle community.
"The last time a face appeared as a crop circle was in 2002 when an alien face appeared at Sparsholt in Hampshire.
"The farmers whose land has been used to make the circles are worried that they will be inundated with visitors seeking a religious experience".

Researching the moving rocks of Racetrack Playa, California, America - 11 Aug 2010
Mandatory Credit: Photo by NASA/GSFC/Maggie McAdam / Rex Features ( 1216681b )
The rocks move and leave tell-tale trails in the clay. The trails can be straight, or they can curve. Sometimes, two trails run alongside each other.
The Mystery of the Moving Rocks
It's a puzzling sight that the world of science has never found a conclusive answer for - rocks that seemingly move across the plains of California.
Since the 1940s researchers have documented trails left from the movement of boulders on so-called playas, or dry lakes, in Death Valley.
Amazingly, rocks as big as 700 pounds have been subject to the unexplained phenomena that sees them seemingly glide over the parched landscape - even changing direction on their path.
Some rocks travel in pairs, leaving two tracks perfectly in synch along straight stretches and around curves. Others seem undecided about direction and travel back and forth. sometimes travelling the length of several football fields.
Most cases see the trails leading to resting rocks, but in others they have disappeared.
Now a team of seventeen undergraduate and graduate students from the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Academy (LPSA) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center have begun an investigation.
They travelled to the Racetrack and nearby Bonnie Claire playas this summer to investigate how these rocks move across the nearly empty flats.
"When you see these amazing rocks and trails," says Mindy Krzykowski, an intern from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, "you really get into coming up with your own ideas about what's going on."
For each rock and trail the students recorded GPS coordinates and took photographs. They also dug up small sensors called Hygrochrons buried three months earlier by one of the trip leaders. From these, the interns were able to capture the electronically stored temperature and humidity data.
They marked the trail ...

Prince Philip driving a carriage in the grounds of Windsor Castle, England, Britain - 23 Feb 2009
Prince Philip showed that he had put his recent painful back troubles well and truly behind him today by getting back in the driving seat. Philip pulled a back muscle in January while out carriage riding in the grounds of Sandringham. The injury forced the 87-year-old to cancel a number of royal engagements, leading to public fears over his health. However, he showed no signs of his injury today while out for a spin with a woman groom in Windsor. Philip used to compete at the highest level in the sport of carriage driving but over the years has gradually withdrawn from official competition. Despite this, he has commented in the past that there is nothing he enjoys more than "driving a team through the British countryside". And despite, according to reports, being told to "take it easy" it would seem the Prince just can (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

MegaUpload.com executives in court to face charges of internet piracy and money laundering, New Zealand - 20 Jan 2012
Founder Kim "Dotcom" Schmitz, co-founder Mathias Ortmann, Mega's CTO Finn Batato and associate Bram van der Kolk, stood in the dock where they await extradiction to the United States to face charges of mass copyright infringement, racketeering and money laundering. Megaupload.com was forced offline as a result of the arrests and computer hackjers retaliated by attacking sites of the FBI and the US Justice Department, causing major disruption. The mega group had 60 bank accounts worldwide which enabled Schmitz to pay himself $42million in 2010 alone. The group owned a fleet of cars with number plates such as "STONED," "GUILTY" AND "MAFIA." Police have seized over $6m worth of luxury cars from the group executives.
