WOMEN TRY TO SMUGGLE BODY OF DEAD RELATIVE ONBOARD FLIGHT

Two women have been arrested after trying to smuggle the body of a dead relative onboard a flight at Liverpool's John Lennon Airport.

Gitta Jarant, 66, and Anke Anusic, 41, were detained after staff became suspicious when they attempted to check in with the body of Curt Willi Jarant for a flight to Berlin.

With him propped up in a wheelchair and wearing glasses, the mother and daughter claimed that Mr Jarant was simply asleep.

However, airport worker Andrew Millea raised the alarm after he helped the two women lift Mr Jarant's body out of a taxi that they arrived in.

According to Mr Millea he realised 91-year-old Mr Jarant was dead when he felt that his face was ice cold.

After he told security staff his concerns, Ms Jarant and Ms Anusic were escorted to a side room where first-aid staff confirmed that Mr Jarant was dead.

The two women, who are German nationals living in Oldham, were arrested on suspicion of failing to give notification of a death before being bailed to 1 June.

It is thought that the wife and daughter of Mr Jarant were trying to return his body to Germany to avoid costly GBP 3,000 repatriation fees.

They have denied claims that Mr Jarant had already been dead for 24 hours when they entered the airport.

Igloos outside the Arctic Hotel in Ilulissat on Greenland. Ilulissat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the Jacobshavn Glacier or Sermeq Kujalleq which is the largest glacier outside Antarctica. The glacier drains 7% of the Greenland ice sheet and produces enough water from calving icebergs in one day to provide New York with water for 1 year. Climate change has meant the glacier has speeded up and is now one of the fastest glaciers in the world at up to 40 metres per day and is also receeding rapidly

Icebergs from the Jacobshavn glacier or Sermeq Kujalleq drains 7% of the Greenland ice sheet and is the largest glacier outside of Antarctica. It calves enough ice in one day to supply New York with water for one year. It is one of the fastest moving glaciers in the world at up to 40 metres per day (19 metres per day before 2002) and has also receeded rapidly (40 km since 1850) due to human induced climate change as temperatures have risen in Greenland by 9 degrees fahrenheit in the last 60 years. An underwater moraine at the mouth of the fjord grounds the largest icebergs causing a backlog of ice completely blocking the entire length of the fjord with ice.
