RUN! The Family That Got Too Close To A Protective Mother Hippo
RUN! THE FAMILY THAT GOT TOO CLOSE TO A PROTECTIVE MOTHER HIPPO
A day admiring the wildlife turned into a panicked run to safety for one family when they were charged by a hippo.
The tourists were admiring the view at iSimangaliso Wetland Park, St Lucia, South Africa where a group - or pod- of hippopotamus were enjoying a cooling dip in a waterhole.
But when they strayed onto the cherished grazing area of grass surrounding the water they found themselves at the business end of a disgruntled mother protecting her calf.
Photographer Avi Hirshchfield says: "It was a beautiful day and I was observing the hippos enjoying the water in the sunshine.
"I noticed a family on the other side of the waterhole moving forward trying to get a better view of the hippos. But obviously they strayed too close for the mother hippo with her young calf as she suddenly took off towards them.
"Luckily they moved very quickly as the hippo quickly decided they weren't a threat and backed off."
The unidentified family did well to react quickly as hippos can easily outrun a human, reaching 19mph (30 km/h) despite their stocky shape and short legs.

THE MAGIC OF BAVARIA
Lederhosen, schnitzel and beer can, of course, be found in abundance in Bavaria, but this German state also has much, much more to offer the traveller.
Think breathtaking alpine scenery, quaint towns and historical cities, fairytale castles and historic customs and traditions - Germany's largest bundesland has it all.
Situated in the south-east of the country, Bavaria extends from the North German Plain down into the Alps.
It shares international borders with the Czech Republic and Austria as well as with Switzerland. The awe inspiring Bavarian Alps define the border with Austria and within the range is the highest peak in Germany, the Zugspitze.
Along with the Rheinland and Berlin, Bavaria is Germany's most popular tourist destination and it isn't hard to see why.
The town of Mittenwald is situated in the Valley of the River Isar and is one of the best known tourist places in the Bavarian Alps. The town is famous for the manufacture of violins, violas and cellos, and its streets are littered with handcrafted signs advertising where the instruments are for sale.
The most significant landmark in the village is the pink colored Roman Catholic church of Saints Peter and Paul, which is typical of the region. The Bavarians have a long history of decorating the exteriors of their houses and businesses with both religious and historic paintings. And the church in Mittenwald, as well as many of the surrounding buildings, is decorated with elaborate paintings on its exterior walls.
Fussen is a small enchanting town, rich in culture and art, that is located on the banks of the Lech River. Standing at 808 m above sea level it is he highest town in Bavaria and also marks the end of the 'Romantic Road'. This was a term coined by trave...

Somaliland The Invisible Nation
Nomads lead their camels to a watering hole in rural Somaliland, on Tuesday, July 24, 2007. More than half the country's 3.5 million population are nomadic pastoralists with livestock being the country's major export.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in May 1991, after a brutal civil war ended with the overthrow of military dictator Siad Barre. For the past 16 years the country has operated as a de facto state with relative stability; it has a constitution, a working political system, government institutions, police and military and its own currency. The multi-party elections of 2002 were declared the most peaceful in Africa for 20 years.
However, despite its success, no country formally recognizes Somaliland's sovereignty. With high unemployment and widespread poverty Somaliland's leaders believe recognition will pave the way for much needed aid and support from International financial institutions. With officially recognized diplomatic offices in London and Brussels and improving relations with many other nations, Somaliland is making increasingly credible claims to statehood.
