Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival 2020: The festival that dodged a pandemic.
Sinead O'Connor pictured at the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival 2020 premiere of Citizens of Boomtown. A documentary which tellsÊthe story of Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats, with contributions from Bono, Sting and Sinead OÕConnor.
This was an assignment for the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival 2020 to create a set of portraits of visiting actors and directors for the festivalÕs archive.
The festival closed on 8th March 2020 to great reviews. Four days later, on 12 March, TaoiseachÊLeo VaradkarÊannounced the closure of all schools, colleges and childcare facilities. On March 27th Leo Varadkar introduced a mandatory order for everyone to stay at home. As the impact of the global pandemic hit around the world, many arts events and festivals were cancelled or postponed or went online. The Irish Times said ÔÊVMDIFF 2020 looks like the last film festival to escape unscathed before the plague of cancellations set in. They were, if anything, blessed.Õ
Dublin International Film FestivalÊis a Ôbest of festÕ audience event - to bring the best of world cinema to Dublin. An audiences of 20,000 - 22,000 attend the festival each year. The festival screens approximately 110 films, in 4 city centre venues and 6 venues around the country with an emphasis on contemporary world cinema; the programme is very much public facing with a programme of new work from both established and emerging auteurs. The main showcase is amplified by small strands on silent cinema, young people, retrospective titles and shorts. Approximately 60 guests from around the world, many are filmmakers but we also invite press, programmers and distributors. It takes place at the start of the year and usually 20% of its programme platforms new Irish work. World class masterclass are presented like those with Pawel Pawiliowski and Charlie Kaufman this year. Previous guests including Al Pacino, Richard Gere, Quentin Tarantino, Mark Wahlberg, Tilda Swinton, Danny De
