Light Pillars over the town of Lacombe, Canada
Photographer captures rare light pillars phenomenon, Lacombe, Alberta, Canada - 04 Jan 2018
A photographer has taken extraordinary pictures of rare LIGHT PILLARS extending into the night sky after sunset. Darlene Tanner took the unusual photos of the atmospheric optical phenomenon in Lacombe, Alberta in America this week as temperatures dipped to minus 32C. She said: "Light pillars are very unusual, the conditions have to be just right, very cold with ice crystals." Light pillars are created by the reflection of light from millions of tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They form a vertical band of light which appears to extend above a light source - in this case the lights from buildings. The crystals responsible for the pillars gather together to act as a giant mirror, which reflects the light source upwards or downwards into a virtual image.

Egrets at a pond in Tokyo, Japan - Nov 2016
This wonderful series of egrets hunting, resting and flying shows you don't need to live rurally to capture nature at its finest.
Photographer Kunito Imai has a lifelong love of the natural world, though he lives in central Tokyo - and he has no regrets about his choice of habitat.

Herring gull swallows coot chick
Herring gull captures coot chick, St.James Park, London, UK - 14 Jun 2016
Call it the circle of life, but it's still pretty icky.
Wildlife photographer Ed Brown captured the fate of an unfortunate coot chick who caught the eye of a hungry herring gull in a London park on Tuesday (14 June).
He says: "I was sitting on one of the benches in St James Park watching all the wildlife on the lake when a group of coots started making warning calls. I looked round and saw this herring gull had taken one of the chicks, predictably, it was now being harassed by the adult coots and flew off towards the middle of the lake carrying the chick (chick was dead by this point) It tried to swallow it down while on the lake but actually looked to be too big, it was then it carried the chick back to land where it finally managed to eat it. I have to say that its pretty grim to watch but I also realise its the circle of life, the Gull needs to eat too."

We all have our favourite foods - but a cat's love for catnip has to be seen to be believed.
These hilarious portraits are from a photo project documenting the phenomenon.
They were captured by pet photographer Andrew Marttila.
He explains: "I'm a 30 year old animal photographer specialising in cats. I've lived in Philadelphia for the past 5 years, but travel extensively for work all over the United States and abroad.
"I started taking photos for this series a few years ago after witnessing my roommate's cat's penchant for catnip. He's something of an addict.
"In addition to rolling around in the green stuff, he loves to eat it, producing some of the coolest photos I've ever taken."

A photographer has captured charming behaviour by foxes as they interact.
Netherlands-based Roeselien Raimond has had a life-long affinity with the furry mammals and, with foxes sometimes regarded as pests, enjoys capturing them in a positive light.
Roeselien, 42, explains: "I used to 'know' foxes from childhood stories, in which they are consequently depicted as these ferocious but very smart animals. Their intelligent nature had always fascinated me and I wondered if they would be truly that mean.
"You should see them when they meet and greet each other: that's such a funny and heart-warming moment to witness; wildly wagging their tails, ears flat and screaming enthusiastically to each other."
