Battle at Ypres WWI Canadians v Germans - Ypres, a medieval town in Belgium, was taken by the German Army at the beginning of the war. However, by early October, 1914, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was able to recapture the town. The first major German attempt to regain Ypres took place on 15th October. Experienced BEF riflemen held their positions but suffered heavy losses. German attacks took place for the next four weeks but with the arrival of the French Army the line was held. With the weather deteriorating, the Germans decided to abandon the Ypres offensive on the 22nd November. It is estimated that about 135,000 Germans were killed or badly wounded during the offensive. The BEF lost around 75,000 men and was effectively destroyed as a professional army. There were two more major battles at Ypres: 2nd Battle of Ypres (April-May, 1915) and Passchendaele (July-October, 1917). The Second Battle of Ypres, as it is known in British military history, encompassed four battles in the northern sector of the Ypres Salient. The first of these began on 22 April 1915 as a surprise attack by the German 4th Army on the Allied front line. This attack witnessed the first use of a new German weapon on the Western Front: poisonous gas. Its deadly effect was carried on a gentle breeze towards French troops and as a result of its devastating effect on the French the German infantry made a significant advance into Allied territory. During the next four weeks the Allied Forces of Belgium, France and Britain fought to hold off the successful German advance and to regain the ground that had been lost north of Ypres. The fourth battle ended on 25 May 1915.

    Various Barack Obama family images
    THE OBAMA FAMILY'S MULTICULTURAL MIX

These intimate family pictures give a glimpse into the life of a man who aims to make history as the first black American president - Barack Obama.

The images highlight the multicultural and extended nature of the family that the Senator from Chicago enjoys.

Obama was born in Hawaii to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black Kenyan, and Ann Dunham, a white American from Wichita, Kansas.

The couple separated when Obama was two years old and later divorced.

While Obama's father returned to Kenya his mother married Lolo Soetoro, and the family moved to Soetoro's home country of Indonesia.

    This union produced Obama's half-sister Maya Soetoro-Ng.

On his father's side, the Obamas are members of the Luo tribe, which is Kenya's third-largest ethnic group.

Obama's father produced six sons and a daughter; his children with his first wife, and Obama's stepmother, Kezia, include sons Roy (now known as Abong'o), Bernard, and Abo, and daughter Auma.

He also had two further two sons with a different woman.

    Fidel Castro playing chess
December 7, 2002, Havana, Cuba: Cuban President Fidel Castro reacts while playing against Lazaro Castro during a chess tournament at the Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana. After decades on the global political chessboard, Cuban President Fidel Castro joined 11,000 other Cubans at the real thing on Saturday, taking part in what Cuban officials billed as the world's largest chess exhibition. In the background, a picture of Che Guevara. Castro was born and raised on his family's sugar plantation. He became a lawyer and devoted himself to helping the poor; he intended to run for a parliamentary seat before Batista overthrew the Cuban government. Castro went to court and challenged Batista with violating the constitution, but when his claim was rejected, he started his own army and went through several attempts to start a revolution before Batista fed the country on New Year's Day 1959. The new government was met initally with popular support, even in the face of numerous US attempts to assassinate Castro and inspire an overthrow. Since then, Castro has made Marxist decisions to nationalize industry, confiscate property not owned by Cubans, and enact policies to benefit peasants and laborers. A large anti-Castro middle class community has since fled to Miami. Castro is the world's longest-serving political leader.. Credit: Sven Creutzmann / Polaris (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

Saddam Hussein laughs as he shares a joke with a guard at his trial held under tight security in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone in Iraq. Saddam and other defendants face charges that they ordered the killing in 1982 of nearly 150 people in the mainly Shiite village of Dujail north of Baghdad after a failed attempt on the former dictator's life.

OUT OF THE DUST - LIFE IN AFGHANISTAN

A powerful collection of images of everyday life in Afghanistan will be displayed for the first time in the UK in a new exhibition this summer.

'Out of the Dust - Life in Afghanistan' features images by Dutch photographer Hans Stakelbeek. The exhibition runs from 30 July-31 August 2008 at PM Gallery in west London.

In 2007 Hans Stakelbeek was commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to document the reconstruction of Afghanistan during the efforts to restore peace and stability to the country.

Stakelbeek made four trips last year, shooting in Kabul and Uruzgan, as well as other remote areas.

As the project developed, he also became interested in capturing the stories of the people he came to know, as well as the reconstruction efforts required by his official posting.

'Out of the Dust' presents a set of images that pays tribute to the determination of the Afghan people to survive and live as normally as possible through the upheaval - building homes, going to school and working and playing in testing and frightening times.

The collection gives a rare view of daily life in Afghanistan without a military slant and each photograph comes complete with Stakelbeek's own written commentary, which reveals the stories within.

The exhibition is an up-to-date ...

    MAYAN MYSTICISM IN CHIAPAS

Visitors to the Mexican state of Chiapas are guaranteed a trip drenched in Mayan mysticism, as well as unfettered access to lovely hotels, colonial towns and indigenous cultures.

The Pacific Coast state also benefits from an abundance of lush green fields, forests and jungles, fresh air, unique flora and fauna and rare species.

Many ethnic groups live in Chiapas and each has kept their traditions, languages and folklore alive. Their economy is based on cultivation - corn, beans, squash, potatoes, vegetables, pears, tomatoes and other plants - and raising animals such as pigs and poultry. And the colourful costumes of each group are just as varied as the countryside that surrounds them.

Due to this ethnic tradition Chiapas is also famous for its handcrafts. The Tojolabals make various articles in wood and clay; the Lacandons produce reed flutes, hammocks, nets, leather bags, polished and decorated gourds, clay dolls and necklaces of seeds; while the Zoques are masters at weaving baskets and making toys.

Surrounded by dozens of traditional Tzotzil and Tzeltal villages, the city of San Cristobal de Las Casas is at the heart of one of the most deeply rooted indigenous areas in Mexico. Set in a gorgeous highland valley, the colonial city has been a popular travelers' destination for decades. This makes it both an excellent base for local and regional exploration and a place where ancient customs coexist with modern luxuries. Many people who visit Chiapas stay in the town and use it as a base-camp to explore the surrounding area.

However, San Cristobal is an interesting city in its own right, with a rich history. It's a pleasure to explore the city's cobbled streets a...
