The reunification of two paintings by Edouard Manet (1832-1883), never before displayed together in the UK, and the opportunity to speak to National Gallery curators about the display

Edouard Manet, At the Café, 1878, oil on canvas

Edouard Manet, Corner of a Café Concert, 1878-80, oil on canvas

On 30 May 2025, as part of the celebrations for the National Gallery’s bicentenary, Manet’s (1832-1883) Corner of a Café-Concert (1878-80) is reunited with At the Café (1878), generously lent by the Oskar Reinhart Collection 'Am Römerholz' in Winterthur, Switzerland.) Not seen together since the successful exhibition held at Oskar Reinhart collection 'Am Römerholz' in 2005/6, the paintings have been exceptionally reframed in custom made frames showing the edges of the canvases.

These two pictures originally formed part of a larger composition known as Reichshoffen – the name of a popular Parisian brasserie and café-concert. Manet, a keen observer of modern life, painted a snapshot view of its interior, with a singer on stage performing in the background.

Finding My Blue Sky, this group exhibition brings together over 20 major international artists including Lubaina Himid, Haroon Mirza, Laure Prouvost, Sean Scully, Otobong Nkanga, Simone Fattal, Hugh Hayden, Barbara Walker, among many others.

Framed as a “love-letter to London” from the curator, it will span across both Lisson Gallery spaces as well as its courtyards, windows and adjacent street corners where for example Himid is creating new murals.

There are twelve new commissions for the show, including works produced in and inspired by the local area, as well as very rarely seen historical works, several of which have never been exhibited in Europe before.

It features paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and mixed media works, ranging in size from intimate works on paper to major paintings measuring over 3m tall, and large-scale outdoor murals.
