NOT AN UNFAMILIAR SIGHT - AS ANOTHER 'BLITZ' HITS PORTSMOUTH.
Residents inspect one of the results of the double explosion which shook this South Coast naval town recently when 1400 tons of shells and bombs exploded at the Royal Naval Ammunition depot here. But this was not the first time that people had seen a boarded up shop front or window, for Portsmouth and nearby Gosport (where this picture was taken) had its fair share of bombing during the war.
There were two main explosion centres - on a string of ammunition barges, eight of which were sunk, and the other on an ammunition loading jetty, where a train was hurled into the warer and the whole of the end of the jetty destroyed.
