A space craft prop from the first Star Wars movie has sold for a record breaking $3.13 million USD / €2.97 million euros at an auction of mostly sci-fi movie props from the collection of Oscar-nominated Holluywood model maker Greg Jein, who died last year at the age of 76.

The entire collection sold for $13.6 million USD.It featured more than 550 iconic models, props, costumes and art and was the second-highest-grossing Hollywood auction in history, according to Heritage Auctions, behind only a $22.8 million Debbie Reynolds auction in 2011.
OPS: Other highlights from the Greg Jein auction included this, the one of the only known surviving space suits from Stanley Kubrick's 1968 classic movier 2001: A Space Odyssey. The six-piece ensemble in this auction, including the helmet and the backpack, hailed from the sequence on the moon, where the monoliths signal to the Firstborn that humans have taken another step in their evolution. A space craft prop from the first Star Wars movie has sold for a record breaking $3.13 million USD / €2.97 million euros at auction.

The 1:24 scale model is said to be a world record price for a screen-used Star Wars film prop.

The extremely desirable lot was a long-lost model of an X-wing fighter used in
1977’s Star Wars movie A New Hope.

It featured in the filming of the climactic battle sequence in which the Rebel Alliance attack’s Darth Vader’s Death Star.

It was one of four “hero” models built for filming close-ups during the space battle.

It featured as the lead attack craft flown by Red Leader.

The 20-inch / 50 cm model had been considered lost for decades.

However, it was discovered in a cardboard box in the garage of the Oscar-nominated model maker Greg Jein, who died last year at the age of 76.

It was found by a team of visual effects experts, including Gene Kozicki while helping Jein’s family sift through his collection.

The bidding for the miniature model began at $400,000 USD / €379.525 euros before the hammer came down at $3.13 million USD.
