    THREE WISE ORPHANS

If appearances are any guide , the wisdom of patriarchs has been acquired in three short weeks of life by these baby tawny owls at the London Zoo .
The three orphans were found when a decayed tree crashed at Mitcham , Surrey .
A local resident saw them lying on the ground and informed the people's Dispensary for sick Animals . After a night's lodging at the P.D.S.A. headquarters in London they were transferred to the zoo - where they are much happier than they look .

    Indonesia's Illegally Traded Owls
People watch owls outside their cages at the bird market in Malang, Indonesia, on September 8, 2025. Indonesia is home to 45 species of owls, many of which appear in markets. Scops owls (Otus spp.) are among the most numerous and frequently traded, being smaller and typically less expensive. However, larger species like Barn Owls (Tyto alba), Oriental Bay Owls (Phodilus badius), Buffy Fish Owls (Ketupa ketupu), as well as Wood-owls, Eagle-owls, and Fish-owls, are also increasingly seen. Estimates from a ResearchGate study indicate that about 12,000 Scops owls and 1,000 larger owls are sold annually in Indonesian bird markets, a figure the study suggests involves a significant number of wild-caught birds.

Seven, three-day-old ducklings lined up on a log
Three-day-old-ducklings at Pennywell Farm, Devon, Britain - 25 Apr 2011
When it comes to family photos there's always one who has to misbehave. They may only be three days old but it's already clear who out of this brood of seven ducklings is going to cause the most trouble. When the fluffy youngsters were all lined up for a family portrait at Pennywell Farm in Devon one of them just simply refused to co-operate. While his cute siblings happily faced the camera the rebellious youngster turned his back. To make matters worse he then managed to fall from his perch, almost causing the whole brood to take a tumble. According to farmer Chris Murray, 60, this was the ducklings' first outing after being hatched. He comments: "It was so funny as they were all facing the same way staring at the camera out of curiosity, apart from one who sat with his back to it, before deciding to stand up and make all the others tumble off like dominos".

Bonxie (great skua) bird pulling the sheep's wool, to try and get rid off the sheep from the nesting area
Bonxie bird protecting chicks from a sheep, Shetland Islands, Scotland - 04 Jul 2015
    BAAA-CK OFF!

Mothers can be protective, but this hapless sheep didn't know what it was getting itself into when it wandered into the nesting area of a feisty bonxie bird.

Wildlife photographer Josh Jaggard captured the scene in the Shetland Islands as the bird, also known as a great skua, got in a flap protecting her chicks.

First it flew in menacing circles around the woolly intruder before landing on its back and pulling lumps of wool from its back.

One amazing image shows the bird seeming to have a mid-air face-off with the poor creature.

The territorial bonxie then proceeded to tread all over the sheep's back before using it as a seat. Point taken, the sheep wandered off.

Josh says: "The mother was definitely not prepared to let anyone get near her chicks and she let the sheep know all about it. It was remarkable the range of techniques she employed to ward off the invader."

Humboldt Penguin chicks being hand-reared at Flamingo Park, Seaview, Isle of Wight, Britain - 22 Apr 2008
    P-P-P-P-PROTECT A PENGUIN

These cute chicks have been hand-reared by staff at an animal park on the Isle of Wight after fears were raised that their clumsy parents could squash them.

In previous years penguin chicks from the Seaview Flamingo Park have been killed after their loving, but careless, parents flattened them while sitting on them to keep them warm.

Due to this, this year's brood of Humboldt chicks were taken to safety away from their heavy parents; they now enjoy the warmth of an office and are being hand-fed a liquidised fish mix three times a day.

The Humboldt chicks range from two days to three weeks old and still have their soft, velvety grey feathers.

Humboldt penguins are one of the most endangered of the penguin species. Since most healthy adult penguins fear few land predators they have little natural fear of people, which has made them an easy target for human hunters and egg gatherers.

FEATURE - Künstlerin Lucia Heffernan malt Küken in Yoga-Posen
Artist and graphic designer Lucia Hefferman’s work explores her lifelong fascination with animals. In her latest artwork she depicts chicks in perfect yoga poses.

Lucia, who is from Salt Lake City, Utah, exhibited the works at the CODA Gallery in Palm Desert, California last month (December2021).

The cute creatures curl and stretch their feathered limbs into perfect poses - emulating the most flexible yoga practitioner.

Explaining what inspires her paintings, Lucia writes on her website: “Through my paintings, I seek to give animals a voice and a personality, while making light of our uniquely human existence. By imagining what animals might do if put in human situations, I stage tableaus that shine a spotlight on both their innocence and raw instinct. This collision between animal and human sensibilities creates a whimsical, theatrical, and often humorous world that viewers can relate to on an emotional level.”

All her yoga chicks originals are sold, but you can still shop prints on Etsy, and for prints and other originals via her website, www.luciaheffernan.com.

Bonxie (great skua) bird flying around the sheep, trying to warn it off from the nest site
