FLYING CAR FINALLY TAKES OFF
They said it was an idea that wouldn't fly but the Terrafugia Transition 'flying car' has completed its first test flight.
Developers at the Massachusetts-based company were delighted when the "roadable aircraft" lifted off smoothly at Plattsburgh International Airport in Plattsburgh, NY on March 5, 2009.
After 37 seconds pilot Col. Phil Meteer, USAFR (Ret), executed a smooth landing and taxied safely to a full stop.
The flight comes after six months of drive testing and taxi testing.
The two-seat plane, which has fold-out wings that span 27.5ft when extended, has an airborne range of 450 miles and can cruise at over 115mph.

Powered by a 100 hp, Rotax 912S, four-stroke engine, it is expected to go on sale for around GBP 127,000 (Eur 135,000, US$180,000).
Following a successful full vehicle inspection, flight testing continued with six additional flights proving out the vehicle's aerodynamics and smooth handling characteristics.
"This flight is a symbol of a new freedom in aviation. It's what enthusiasts have been striving for since 1918," says Carl Dietrich, CEO of Terrafugia.
By giving pilots a convenient ground transportation option, the Transition reduces the cost, hassle, and weather sensitivity of personal aviation. It also increases safety by incorporating automotive crash structures and...
