Britain's First Astronaut To Go Into Space For 20 Years
One giant leap for Britain as the UK's first official astronaut, Major Tim Peake will travel to the International Space Station.
The six-month mission will see the 41-year-old blasted into space on a Russian Soyuz rocket from Baikonur in Kazakhstan in November 2015.
ESA's Director General, Jean-Jacques Dordain said: "When we recruited the six new ESA astronauts in May 2009, I made a promise to secure flight opportunities for all of them.
"Thanks to the decisions of the Member States at the Ministerial Council last November, we will be able to fulfil our commitment to fly all six newly selected astronauts before the end of 2017."
Major Peake is the only Briton ever to be accepted into the European Astronaut Corps and his mission will make him the first UK national to travel and work in space, under the Union Jack, on a British Government-funded mission.
Prime Minister David Cameron hailed the mission as a 'momentous day for Britain'.
Peake, who served in the British Army for 18 years and is a former helicopter test pilot, said: "It really is a true privilege to be assigned to a long duration mission; it feels like a real high point in a long career in aviation."
The Major said it was too early to say what experiments he would be involved in, but it would include medical research into vaccines, fluids physics and astrobiology.
Tim has been training for the expedition since 2009 and beat more than 8,000 hopefuls to be selected along with five other colleagues from across Europe.

Paul Goldstein 'In The Air' themed images - 13 Feb 2012

Flights of Fancy: Paul Goldstein's 'In The Air' Wildlife Photography
For photographers, capturing animals in the wild is an art that can take years to master.
But wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein has taken his work to new heights by shooting animals frozen in the air as they leap.
His work sees stunning images showing jumping animals ranging from wildebeest to polar bears.
They include a dramatic flying fight between a baboon and a leopard and the cute, bouncy interaction between a pair of serval kittens.
Paul explains: "Mammals and indeed penguins cannot fly, it would be a physiological miracle if it occurred, but it is wonderful to see them try. It also is rare, which is why I like photographing it as it is a huge challenge. If the shot is successful it always elicits a good response.
"For the money shot there must be no part of the animal attached to a tree/branch/ice or rock. It does not matter if it is an 'air's breath' away, but just nothing touching.
"Air looms high on my agenda, I am obsessed by it, it is exciting photography and frequently original."
Describing the moment the baboon ambushed the leopard, Paul says: "Prime Mates? I don't think so, these are mortal enemies and a whole troop of baboons had 'treed' this young male leopard in the Masai Mara.
"Eventually they left, except one male that waited for the predators descent and jumped out at him. It gave the leopard a good dry slap then the leopard legged it and vaporised in seconds as is their wont.
"Whilst leopards will sometimes kill single baboons, they will avoid whole troops assiduously as they can turn on them. One of my favourite ever photos."
Regarding the polar bear cubs in Spitsbergen, Paul says: "What a morning. Seven polar bears in four hours many nautical miles from land in Spitsbergen. These two cub...

Streets Ahead: Amazing 3D Pavement Art
From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles escaping from the sewer at London's Southbank to a Royal Wedding in Sweden this stunning 3D street art is probably the best on the planet.
Thanks to skilled British artists Joe Hill and Max Lowry pedestrians have had a whole host of dangers to negotiate as they go about their business.
For the past eight years the talented twosome have brought their 3D art skills to pavements all around the globe - with jaw-dropping results - raging waterfalls, a record-breaking crevasse and the legendary Loch Ness monster.
Since Max tragically passed away in 2010, Joe decided to continue their work, keeping the name 3D Joe and Max in Max's memory.
His latest work includes a giant beanstalk bursting through the pavement to celebrate the release of Jack The Giant Slayer, which opens in cinemas today (March 22), extending The Solaris Building in Singapore by four levels and building a futuristic city for Motorola in London and Barcelona.
Not only do these incredible chalk drawings look realistic by themselves - but when passers-by jump into the scene they take on a life of their own.
Press Officer for 3D Joe and Max, Lucy Pratt said: "We usually use chalk to 'map out' the picture and then use paint after, the illusion is created through a camera lens.
"Sometimes an intricately detailed large-scale drawing can take up to seven days to complete, sometimes longer depending on the weather.
"Our standard size is 6 meters x 3 meters and these take, on average three to four days."
Their eye-catching creations are often created for live events, marketing campaigns, music videos and TV commercials.

JAKE IS A BEEFCAKE MOUNTAIN
Jake Gyllenhaal is seen here from the upcoming big screen adaptation of the "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" video game.
"I over-prepared myself because I never knew how much they were going to ask me to do, so I just made sure I'd be hopefully able to do anything," Gyllenhaal said of his new physique. "I guess I've gotten buff. There's a lot acrobatics in the movie Ñ a lot of running up walls, and jumping on things and Parkour, so it requires muscularity, but it requires a lot of aerobic ability too."
In the new movie, Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia must join forces with Tamina, a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.
"Prince of Persia" is directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 28th, 2010.

Storm clouds and lightning at Vivian, South Dakota, America - 23 Jul 2010

The Icemaker - Chad Cowan's Super Storms
It looks like the end of the world, instead this once-in-a-lifetime image shows a lightning bolt crackling from a hailstorm cloud.
The jaw-dropping picture - dubbed The Icemaker - captures the storm that unleashed the world record hail stone onto South Dakota in summer.
And storm chasing photographer Chad Cowan is hoping that this highlight of last storm season will win the National Geographic Exceptional Experiences photo contest, in which it is down to the last six finalists.
His gallery of best shots taken in 2010 also offer some amazing glimpses at nature at its most powerful.
The 26-year-old, a storm fan since his early teens, follows dramatic weather across the United States and even runs tours for storm fanatics.
But even for a seasoned storm chaser the decision to drive towards this storm was a cause for apprehension.
Chad, from Kansas, explains: "Looking at the radar on my laptop, it became obvious that there was one storm that would be an absolute monster.
"I became somewhat apprehensive in driving towards this storm because I saw that the ingredients of a 'perfect storm' had come together
"We saw this cloud explode into the sky like an atom bomb, and it soon became a supercell also, south of the larger storm.
"As we approached, though, my stomach dropped as the shape of the beast became visible above the horizon.
"I had never seen anything like it and didn't speak much, only muttering single syllable words like, "epic" and "woah".
"I finally got my wits about me and decided to get out my camera. I flipped it on, checked the settings and leaned out the window and...
