A superbug busting paint has been developed which could make hospitals less susceptible to infections for patients and staff.
It would also prevent spread of another coronavirus-like pandemic.
In trials, ew paint was applied to a range of surfaces to effectively kill bacteria and viruses, including difficult to destroy species such as MRSA, flu and COVID-19.
The new paint-on resin incorporates bacteria-killing chlorhexidine, which is often used by dentists to treat mouth infections and for pre-surgical cleaning.
The coating was developed by UK scientists at the University of Nottingham’s School of Pharmacy.
The team worked with a company called Indestructible Paint that manufactures specialist, high-performance coatings for a wide range of industries.
Together they created a prototype antimicrobial paint using this new material and have found it effectively activates when dried to kill a range of pathogens.
The new paint can be applied to a range of plastic and hard non-porous surfaces.
As well as hospital settings the team is also investigating its use in the transport and aerospace industry.

A voice-responsive holographic AI assistant designed which looks like a pair of expressive eyes hovering in mid-air, has been released.
The team behind the FaceAI say they expect it to revolutionise how people engage with technology.
FaceAI is a voice assistant with artificial intelligence that materialises as a lifelike digital presence.
Unlike ordinary voice assistants, FaceAI the makers claim it engages and converses like a real companion and currently can do it in 50 languages.
The hologram is brought to life by projecting an image onto a cloud of tiny water droplets.
The light refracts through the droplets, creating a sharp, three-dimensional image in the shape of the two eyes.
This is said to make every interaction as natural as a face-to-face conversation.
The hologram is emotionally engaging, with the animated eyes able to reportedly express real-time reactions.
The AI speaks and responds visually, mirroring the emotional flow of the conversation.
Polish company Pioneering Tech which created it said: “This dynamic interaction ensures that every exchange feels personal, intuitive, and truly human-like.
“Imagine conversing with an AI that feels as real as a person standing right in front of you.”
